Long on my to-visit-list, last December I had the perfect excuse to visit Scotland, or at least its capital city Edinburgh. My little brother was studying in nearby Glasgow for his master, my husband had to travel to the UK for work, and I was excited myself to visit some Christmas markets, so here I am landing in Edinburgh and bravely facing the freezing temperatures to explore this captivating city.
To be honest I was quite lucky with the weather, since it was snowing across all of Europe, while Scotland was somehow sunny, yet very cold with morning temperature around -6℃.

เมื่อเดือนธันวาปีที่แล้วจังหวะดี คุณสามีต้องไปทำงานที่อังกฤษและมีวันว่าง เราเลยถือโอกาสแวะเยี่ยมน้องชายคนเล็กซึ่งเรียนโทอยู่ที่เมืองใกล้ๆ และไปเที่ยวเล่นชมเมืองที่ใครๆต่างก็หลงรักแห่งนี้ ทุกอย่างราบรื่นเป็นไปด้วยดี ติดอยู่แค่อย่างเดียว อากาศมันช่างหนาวสะท้านทรวงเหลือเกิน! ขนาดว่าโชคดีอากาศแจ่มใสไม่เจอฝนตลอดทริป ยังตื่นมาเจอกับเช้าที่ติดลบ 6 องศา (กลัวแล้วจ้าาา)
The right location is essential to walk around this compact but hilly city, so our hotel at the foot of Carlton Hill was the ideal base to explore.
Walking up to the top gave me a good view of the city landscape, with the old town and the Castle perched on top the hill, the new town with its geometrically planned roads and modern shops at the bottom, and the Princes street gardens with the colourful Christmas market dividing the two.

Needless to say most of the interesting sights are in the old town, the Edinburgh Castle dominates the city and offers great views and the old winding streets are fun to explore, while the Royal Mile is the long street that descend the hill from the Castle towards Holyrood Palace.
This palace is a fantastic place to visit, still used as official residence by Queen Elizabeth II, the older 16th century apartments of Mary, Queen of Scots, are open to the public as a museum. Having known her story through a Netflix serie “Reign”, I was excited to see where her rollercoaster life took place, rising as the Queen of Four countries then falling into disgrace before being executed, fulfilled with mystery, dramas and the thrilling murder of an aide in her own bedroom. It all felt so real as I was walking around her own apartments.
ในส่วนของเมืองเก่า (old town) ซึ่งเป็นมรดกโลกนั้น แน่นอนว่าทุกคนต่างมุ่งหน้าไปที่ปราสาท Edinburgh Castle แลนด์มาร์คของเมืองเป็นที่แรก ถึงจะไม่ได้เข้าชมด้านใน แต่บรรยากาศรอบๆก็นับว่าสวยคุ้มค่า ลงจากปราสาทเดินตามถนนสายหลัก Royal Mile ไปอีกซักพัก ก็จะเจอกับ Holyrood Palace ที่ตั้งตระหง่านอยู่ตรงสุดถนน พระราชวังแห่งนี้ปัจจุบันพระราชินี Queen Elizabeth ที่สองของอังกฤษยังทรงใช้เป็นที่ประทับเวลาเสด็จพระราชดำเนินมาพักผ่อนที่เอดินเบอระ
อันที่จริงเราสนใจมาตามรอยพระราชวังเก่าแก่ที่เต็มไปด้วยเรื่องราวแห่งนี้เพราะได้ดูซีรี่ส์เรื่อง Reign ของช่อง Netflix ซึ่งนำเสนอเรื่องราวในประวัติศาสตร์เกี่ยวกับ Queen Mary Stuart หรือ Mary, Queen of Scots กล่าวกันว่าเธอคือพระราชินีที่มีพระสิริโฉมงดงามและจิตใจอารีย์ แมรี่ได้ขึ้นครองราชย์เมื่อมีอายุเพียง 6 วัน หลังจากที่บิดาซึ่งเป็นกษัตริย์ของสก๊อตแลนด์ในขณะนั้นเสียชีวิต มารดาชาวฝรั่งเศสได้ฝากฝังหมั้นหมายเธอไว้กับราชวงศ์ของฝรั่งเศส เธอจึงได้ไปเติบโตและได้แต่งงานที่นั่นในวัย 16 ปี โชคชะตาได้พาเธอไปถึงจุดสูงสุดเมื่อเธอได้ครองบัลลังค์ของ 4 ประเทศในเวลาเดียวกัน แต่หลังจากนั้นไม่นานทุกอย่างกลับพลิกผัน เธอต้องกลับประเทศสก๊อตแลนด์ แต่งงานใหม่อีกสองครั้ง และจบชีวิตลงด้วยการถูกประหาร
ที่พระราชวัง Holyrood แห่งนี้ เขาเปิดให้ชมห้องนอนของเธอด้วยค่ะ ว่ากันว่าผู้ช่วยของเธอถูกฆ่าด้วยการแทงหลายสิบแผลจากน้ำมือของสามีเธอเองที่ห้องนี้ (แอบขนลุกนิดนึงค่ะ) เสียดายที่เขาห้ามถ่ายรูปด้านในพระราชวังโดยเด็ดขาด นอกจากเรื่องราวที่น่าสนใจแล้ว เรายังสามารถเดินเล่นชมสวน Royal park และยังเดินเชื่อมต่อไปที่ภูเขาชื่อดังของเอดินเบอระ Arthur’s seat ได้อีกด้วยค่ะ
But the excitement does not stop here, after all Edinburgh is the city that inspired J.K. Rowling to write Harry Potter, so you can follow her footsteps into this imaginary world that will start to feel more and more real.
George Hariot’s school was the inspiration for Hogwarts school of wizard and probably the most iconic landmark, while the Greyfriar’s Kirkyard will remind you the Tom Riddle’s graveyard featured in the Goblet of Fire, and the number of places with a link to this novel will await you at every corner of the city, including a suite at the majestic Balmoral hotel where the author is said to have completed the books, room 552 currently named J.K. Rowling suite.
Other than the fact it inspired Diagon Alley, Victoria street is arguably the most picturesque of Edinburgh street and a great place for a walk or shopping, including no.40 where you’ll find all sort of magic stuff and Harry Potter memorabilia.

The Balmoral Hotel โรงแรมสุดหรูใจกลางเมืองซึ่ง J.K. Rowling ได้เขียนตอนจบของแฮร์รี่ พอตเตอร์ เมื่อปี 2007 ขณะที่เธอกำลังพักอยู่ที่โรงแรมนี้ ห้อง 552 ที่เธอพักนั้นปัจจุบันได้ถูกตั้งชื่อว่า J.K. Rowling Suite เพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่เธอ ใครกระเป๋าหนักจะตามไปพักก็ได้ไม่ว่ากันค่ะ
และท้ายสุดตรอก Diagon Alley หรือ Victoria street ถนนเส้นที่สวยที่สุดของเมือง ที่ตั้งของร้าน no.40 ร้านขายของเวทมนตร์ทุกสิ่งอย่างที่ถูกกล่าวถึงในหนังสือ ว่าจะซื้อ Bertie bott’s beans รสอ้วกกับรสขี้หูมาลองชิม แต่เห็นราคาแล้วเปลี่ยนใจกลับไปกินลูกอมมายมิ้นท์เหมือนเดิม
It is a really pretty and fun city to explore, but as I mentioned it was starting to fell cold from time to time which means a perfect excuse to sit indoor and enjoy some food and drinks. I would really recommend the Gardener’s Cottage on Royal Terrace Gardens for cosy atmosphere and delicious home made food, it was the perfect place to warm up the body and the soul.

Our special night was at the Number One Balmoral, at the basement of the same hotel with the J.K. Rowling suite, this one Michelin star restaurant is one of the best in town. No trace of Harry Potter in the menu though, just sophisticated fine dining with prime ingredients and skilled execution.
ส่วนมื้อพิเศษจัดเต็มของทริป เราเลือกร้านมิชลินหนึ่งดาว Number One Balmoral ซึ่งอยู่ชั้นใต้ดินของโรงแรม Balmoral (ที่มีห้องสูทของ J.K. Rowling นั่นแหละ) ถึงจะไม่มีเมนูเกี่ยวกับแฮร์รี่ พอตเตอร์ แต่รสชาติอาหารและบริการชั้นเลิศก็ทำเอาเรารู้สึกเหมือนหลุดไปอยู่ในโลกแฟนตาซีไม่น้อย
And no, I didn’t forget to try Angus beef and some of the famous Scotch Whiskey, while normally not my drink of choice I was eager to try the difference in types and flavours, and after all I think I mentioned already it was really really cold outside…
สุดท้ายท้ายสุด สายกิน-สายฟู๊ดดี้ห้ามพลาด นั่นคือการได้ลิ้มลองเมนูเนื้อวัว Angus และจิบสก็อตวิสกี้ แล้วที่นี้คุณถึงจะออกไปป่าวประกาศกับทุกคนได้ว่า “ฉันมาถึงเอดินเบอระแล้วจ่ะ!”
