Zanzibar: the Mystical island of Africa

As many travelers will tell you, after an adventurous safari with early wake-up calls and countless miles or dirt roads, there is nothing better than heading for the beach for some well-earned relaxation.

A big bonus of being in Eastern Africa is that the mystical island of Zanzibar is an easy reach, with its crystal clear water, white powder beaches and interesting culture.

Historically a very strategic island in the trade routes, it started to develop during the Persian time, then becoming such an important island under the domination of the Sultanate of Oman, that the capital was moved there. European colonization followed and for many years Zanzibar was a British protectorate before becoming independent after World Was II. After a short time it became annexed to Tanzania although it maintains a great deal of autonomy till today.

This short history review is the reason why so many cultures and civilization have left heir footprints in this African Island, and why the people that live here are so fascinating in their dresses and customs that it justifies a trip just to witness that.

หลังจากทริปแอดเวนเจอร์แบบเปื้อนดินคลุกโคลนที่ทุ่งมาไซมาร่า คงจะปฏิเสธไม่ได้ว่าร่างกายต้องการการพักผ่อนและ vitamin sea โดสเข้ม ได้ยินมาว่าทางฝั่งตะวันออกของทวีปแอฟริกาเป็นที่ตั้งของเกาะลี้ลับ ซึ่งถูกโจษจันถึงความงามของหาดทรายสีขาวนุ่มละเมียดดั่งปุยนุ่น น้ำทะเลสีฟ้าใสเหมือนอัญมณีบลูโทพาส ผสานกับวัฒนธรรมอาหรับอันน่าหลงใหล จึงต้องมาพิสูจน์ให้เห็นกับตาว่าเกาะ Zanzibar ของ Tanzania นั้นคู่ควรกับสมญานาม “เพชรเม็ดงาม” แห่งแอฟริกาตามที่เล่าลือเพียงใด

ก่อนไปเราลองค้นคว้าประวัติดูคร่าวๆ พบว่า Zanzibar แม้เป็นเพียงเกาะขนาดเล็กแต่กลับมีเรื่องราวอันน่าสนใจอัดแน่น นอกจากเป็นเมืองท่าสำคัญของเส้นทางการค้าเครื่องเทศและทาสในสมัยเปอร์เซีย ครั้งหนึ่งสุลต่านของโอมานยังเคยสถาปนาให้เกาะแห่งนี้เป็นเมืองหลวงของประเทศโอมานอีกด้วย ต่อมาได้ตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของประเทศอังกฤษในยุคล่าอาณานิคมและได้ประกาศอิสรภาพหลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง ปัจจุบันเกาะ Zanzibar เป็นเขตปกครองอิสระที่ขึ้นอยู่กับประเทศแทนซาเนีย (คล้ายกับกรณีของฮ่องกงกับจีน)

จากเรื่องราวในประวัติศาสตร์จะเห็นได้ว่าเกาะนี้เป็นศูนย์กลางความหลากหลายของเชื้อชาติและวัฒนธรรม หลอมรวมเอาวิถีชีวิตแบบแอฟริกา อาหรับ และยุโรปเอาไว้ด้วยกัน ฟังดูน่าสนใจไม่น้อยเลยใช่มั้ยล่ะคะ

Qambani Luxury Resort was my choice of stay on Zanzibar East coast, and looking back, I could not be happier with my choice.

The six independent villas are set among a lush tropical garden, scattered around the main thatched pavilion. They are decorated with style and each veranda offers a great view of the Indian Ocean, our room was named Castaway, which tells a lot how much privacy is valued here. With only a dozen guest at maximum occupancy, I felt like walking to my own private residency each time I crossed the gate to the property. I don’t remember seeing any other guest when I visited the pool, and each evening the dinner tables were set in the patio to provide an intimate and romantic dinner.

The property is quite secluded in location, but the staff will go to great length to help organize any transfer needed.

การเลือกที่พักครั้งนี้โจทย์คือต้องการความสงบและได้พักผ่อนใกล้ชิดกับธรรมชาติ เราจึงเลือกพักที่ชายฝั่งทางตะวันออกของเกาะ ห่างจากแหล่งชุมชนและโซนนิยมของนักท่องเที่ยว Qambani Luxury Resort เป็นรีสอร์ทสร้างใหม่บนหาดริมมหาสุทรอินเดีย ตอนเราไปเมื่อปี 2018 รีสอร์ทเพิ่งเปิดตัวได้ไม่นาน มีวิลล่าทั้งหมด 6 หลัง สระว่ายน้ำ 2 สระ และอาคารส่วนกลางที่ใช้เป็นล๊อบบี้และห้องอาหารแบบเปิด เป็นห้องโถงใหญ่ ไม่มีกำแพง ลมโกรกสบายทั้งวัน เหมาะสำหรับมานั่งเล่นเอนกายหลังอาหาร อ่านหนังสือยามบ่าย นอนชมวิวพระอาทิตย์ลับขอบฟ้า และทานดินเนอร์ใต้แสงจันทร์

ที่นี่คือบ้านพักตากอากาศริมทะเลที่ต้องการให้แขกที่เข้าพักรู้สึกผ่อนคลายที่สุด ออกแบบด้วยโทนสีฟ้า-ขาวสบายตา ใช้เปลือกหอยและงานแฮนด์เมดทำจากวัสดุท้องถิ่นเป็นของตกแต่ง ลานหน้าบ้านมีโซฟาตัวเขื่องกับเปลผูกไว้ให้นอนเล่น (มุมโปรดของเราเลยแหละ) เราสามารถขอให้พนักงานยกอาหารกลางวันมาเสิร์ฟที่นี่ได้ ถ้าวันไหนเกิดอยากเปลี่ยนบรรยากาศจากโต๊ะอาหารริมสระว่ายน้ำ ค่าอาหารสามมื้อรวมในราคาที่พักแล้ว หรือที่เรียกว่า full board เราจึงไม่ได้ออกไปไหนไกล กินๆนอนๆ ว่ายน้ำเล่นอยู่ในบริเวณรีสอร์ท พนักงานดูแลดีเหมือนเราอยู่บ้านตัวเอง ถ้าอยากนวดก็เรียกใช้บริการจากคนนอกให้เข้ามาเซอร์วิสที่ห้องได้ วิลล่าของเราชื่อ Castaway รับประกันความสงบเงียบสมชื่อ วันๆแทบไม่เจอผู้คน เห็นก็แต่พวกลิงแวะมาหาผลไม้กิน

Not far from Qambani, the Rock Bar is a must visit for Instagram lovers. This tiny house was literally built in the water, so during high tides the staff will shuttle guests on a wooden boat. Luckily when I visited the tide was low so we could just walk in and enjoy a drink with the incredible view of the ocean.

Further south Paje beach is a world famous mecca for kite surfers, thanks to reliable winds and smooth waters protected by the coral reef. This beach never feels crowded, despite the number of bars and restaurant along the shore; I liked the relaxed vibe so much that I came here a few times during my stay, the colours of the water were so amazing that I still dream about this spot.

The local village is also quite unique, local people are very humble and the island relies on tourism for the economy, so they were always nice and welcoming, and certainly very creative when naming their shops…or maybe not!

Social distancing พอหอมปากหอมคอ ขอออกไปลั้ลลาเจอเพื่อนมนุษย์บ้าง ไม่ไกลจากที่พักมีร้านอาหารกึ่งบาร์ในบ้านหลังเล็กที่นักท่องเที่ยวสาย blogger จากทั่วโลกพร้อมใจกันเดินทางข้ามน้ำข้ามทะเลเพื่อมายลเป็นขวัญตา (แล้วเราจะพลาดได้ไง?!) ร้านนี้ไม่ได้โด่งดังเพราะอาหารอร่อย แต่เพราะมันตั้งอยู่กลางทะเล! Rock Bar บ้านหลังเล็กสีขาวสร้างบนโขดหินอยู่บนชายหาด ช่วงน้ำขึ้นเราจะเห็นว่ามันลอยอยู่ในทะเล ต้องพายเรือเล็กข้ามไปใช้บริการ เราไปตอนช่วงที่น้ำลดจึงสามารถเดินไปได้ ทางร้านเขามีอาหารขายด้วย เป็นเมนูอาหารจานเดียวทานง่ายๆ ใจนึงก็อยากอุดหนุนแต่ในเมื่อเรามีอาหารสามคอร์สที่รีสอร์ทรออยู่แล้ว เลยนั่งจิบเบียร์ชมวิวพอเป็นพิธี แชะได้รูปสวยถูกใจก็กลับ ถือว่า mission completed!

ชายหาดที่เลื่องชื่อที่สุดของเกาะคือ Paje beach หาดทรายขาวทอดยาวสุดลูกหูลูกตา หาดนี้ป๊อปปูล่าอย่างมากในหมู่นัก kite surf เนื่องจากลมดี คลื่นลูกใหญ่ และไม่มีปะการัง ตลอดชายหาดเป็นที่ตั้งของบาร์ คาเฟ่ และเกสต์เฮ้าส์ เยอะแต่ดูไม่อึดอัด บ้านช่องของชาวบ้านแถวนั้นก็สีสันสดใสเข้ากับบรรยากาศทะเล ที่ชอบสุดคงจะเป็นไอเดียการตั้งชื่อร้านขายของฝาก H&M เอย Harrods เอย Gucci เอย ขนมาครบจบที่พาเจ ที่ต้องระวังหน่อยคือพ่อค้าขายของบนหาดที่มักจะเดินตื๊อไม่ซื้อไม่เลิก ด้านมาต้องด้านกลับ เซย์โนว์วนไปถ้าไม่อยากกลับบ้านหอบถุงพะรุงพะรัง

The Island is pretty spread out, so one day I decided to venture to the Western side of Zanzibar to check out a couple of things that visitors cannot miss.

A trip to Chumbe Island is highly recommended to enjoy amazing snorkeling and relax in a pristine natural environment. Part of a protected marine area, it is run by a conservation fund and used to educate travelers on the delicate balance with nature and biodiversity. Swimming among corals, turtles and even spotting a shark while on the beach made the lesson even more interesting. They also provide lunch and a room for day use, very handy to wash out the sand after a few hours on the beach.

ความสงสัยใคร่รู้ยังไม่จบ มาไกลขนาดนี้อยากไปเที่ยวชมเกาะอื่นแบบ one day trip ดูบ้าง ตามอ่านรีวิวทัวร์หลายที่มาถูกใจเอาเกาะนี้ Chumbe Island เป็นเกาะในเขตอนุรักษ์ที่อนุญาตให้นักท่องเที่ยวเข้าชมได้จำนวนจำกัดต่อวัน จุดประสงค์คือต้องการให้นักท่องเที่ยวได้มาเรียนรู้ระบบนิเวศน์และลองใช้ชีวิตอยู่ร่วมกับธรรมชาติแบบเรียบง่าย ราคาทัวร์ถือว่าสูงมากเมื่อเทียบกับทัวร์ของเกาะอื่นๆ แต่หลังหักค่าใช้จ่ายแล้วเงินทั้งหมดจะถูกนำไปสมทบทุนศูนย์อนุรักษ์ ซึ่งเราเองก็เห็นชอบด้วย

นั่งเรือไปถึงเกาะ แต่ละครอบครัว/คู่จะได้บ้านพักที่เป็นเพิงไม้ไผ่สองชั้นคนละหลัง วางของแล้วก็มารวมตัวกันเพื่อทานอาหารกลางวันและไปดำน้ำ snorkel จากนั้นก็มีกิจกรรมเดินทั่วเกาะเพื่อชมนกและป่า เราเลือกที่จะไม่ไป อยากนอนริมหาดเล่นน้ำให้หนำใจ เพราะเกาะเงียบสงบเป็นส่วนตัวมาก ตื่นเต้นที่เห็นลูกฉลามครีบดำว่ายมาตรงน้ำตื้นด้วย ข้อดีของการมีบ้านพักคือเราได้ใช้อาบน้ำล้างตัว เข้าห้องน้ำทำธุระส่วนตัว และนอนเอกเขนก บนชั้นสองเป็นเบาะและมีมุ้งกางไว้ให้นอนงีบได้ ทั้งเกาะมีที่พักที่นี่ที่เดียว ใครที่ซื้อทัวร์แบบนอนค้างคืนก็อยู่ต่อ ส่วนเราที่มาแค่ชั่วคราวก็ลงเรือกลับเย็นนั้น คอนเซ็ปท์การเที่ยวเชิงอนุรักษ์แบบนี้นับว่าน่าสนใจทีเดียว

เรือพาเรากลับมาเทียบท่าที่ Stone Town เมืองหลวงของเกาะ ซึ่งนอกจากจะเป็นเมืองมรดกโลกยูเนสโก้แล้ว ยังเป็นเมืองเกิดของนักร้องในตำนานอย่าง Freddie Mercury อีกด้วย เราใช้เวลาเย็นนั้นเองในการเดินสำรวจ ทั้งตลาด ร้านค้า และบ้านเรือนชุมชน เมืองมีกลิ่นอายของอาหรับเด่นชัด ร้านค้าส่วนใหญ่ขายเครื่องเทศและชุดแต่งกายสไตล์อาหรับ ตัวอาคารบ้านช่องอาจจะดูทรุดโทรมไม่น่าพิสมัยสักเท่าไรเมื่อคิดถึงอดีตที่เคยรุ่งโรจน์ แต่กระนั้นความสนุกตอนเดินทะลุซอยเล็กซอยน้อยเพื่อหาซื้อของฝากติดมือกลับบ้าน และได้นั่งดื่มด่ำชมบรรยากาศพระอาทิตย์ตกที่โรงแรมหรูริมท่าเรือ ก็นับเป็นการปิดฉากทริปซานซิบาร์ได้อย่างน่าประทับใจไม่น้อย

บางคนอาจจะได้ยินความเห็นที่แตกต่าง หรือความประทับใจมากน้อยต่างกันสำหรับนักท่องเที่ยวที่เคยมาเกาะซานซิบาร์ เชื่อว่าคงไม่มีใครให้คำตอบได้ดีไปกว่าการที่เราได้มาเห็นและสัมผัสเอง อย่าให้คำว่า “เค้าเล่าว่า…” มาปิดกั้นการเดินทางออกหาประสบการณ์ใหม่ๆของเราเลยนะคะ

At the end of this excursion, I headed to Stone Town, the capital city of Zanzibar, a Unesco world heritage site and also the birthplace of Freddie Mercury.

This city became important under the Sultanate of Oman over two hundred years ago, and for long it maintained a central position in the spice trades and slave trades. It has lost much of its former splendor, the white stone used for its building is difficult and expensive to maintain, so the overall feeling might be of a run down place. However, like the rest of the island, curious encounters will surprise you in the little shops tucked in side alleys, and perhaps some unique pieces of art can be still found. A refreshing drink at the Park Hyatt, enjoying the view of the buzzing harbour, was the perfect ending of such a long and interesting day.

I have heard different opinion about Zanzibar from friends who have visited, but I am so glad I came here. This island is just like life itself, not perfect, not always easy, but full of energy and colours, and very rewarding for those who dare to explore.
