A brief tour of Lake Como

Thanks to our frequent flights with Italian national carrier Alitalia we were awarded two free tickets to the Milan Expo 2015, so in the middle of August, while most Italians were heading to the beach, we decided to make our way to Milan to visit this world famous exhibition.

This was the perfect chance to spend a few days and explore the lake area just north of Milan, and more specifically Lake Como. For many years the favorite destination of the elite, with its stunning mountain scenery and cooler climate, it is now overlooked by many Italians, but has in recent years made a comeback in the tourist maps.

Part of this recent popularity is thanks to American actor George Clooney, who has bought a villa on its shores, and a few others billionaires who have bought beautiful homes for their summer holidays.

นอกจากจะไปเปิดโลกทรรศที่งาน Milan Expo 2015 แล้ว เราจึงถือโอกาสแวะเที่ยวที่ทะเลสาปยอดฮิตติดโปรแกรมทัวร์ Lake Como ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ทางตอนเหนือของ Milan เป็นของแถม จากที่เป็นเมืองพักผ่อนยอดนิยมของชาวยุโรปผู้มีอันจะกินเมื่อครั้งก่อน แต่หลายปีที่ผ่านมาเท่าที่ได้สัมผัส รู้สึกว่าชาวอิตาลีเองก็ไม่ได้ปลื้มอะไรนักกับเมืองนี้ จนเมื่อครั้งที่คุณลุงจอร์จ คลูนีย์ และบรรดามหาเศรษฐีและเซเลปจากฮอลลิวูดแห่มาซื้อวิลล่าตากอากาศไว้เท่านั้นแหละ เจ้าทะเลสาปโคโม่แห่งนี้ก็กลับบูมขึ้นมาจนกลายเป็น top destination สุดโรแมนติกสำหรับการมาเที่ยวประเทศอิตาลีไปในบัดดล แถมวิลล่าของจอร์จ คลูนีย์ก็อยู่ในโปรแกรมทัวร์ด้วยนะเออ (ความเป็นส่วนตัวไม่ต้องมีกันล่ะงานนี้)

The shape of the lake resembles an inverted Y, and most of the action seems to happen right in the middle of the lake, with Tremezzo and Menaggio on the western shore, Varenna on the eastern side, and the most famous town Bellagio at the pointy middle.

Despite the weather not being the best, we could certainly see why this place has so much appeal; the scenery is really breathtaking, and the town have a certain feeling of old charm: a great place to unwind and relax, but not so good if you are looking for fun and excitement.

ทะเลสาปแห่งนี้มีรูปร่างเหมือนอักษรตัว Y กลับด้าน บรรยากาศสงบเงียบและมีวิวภูเขาที่สวยงามรายล้อม ประกอบไปด้วยเมือง Tremezzo และ Menaggio อยู่ทางฝั่งตะวันตก เมือง Varenna อยู่ทางตะวันออก และส่วนกลางตรงแหลมนั้นคือเมือง Bellagio เมืองที่ผู้คนชื่นชอบและให้ความสนใจมากที่สุด เรื่องความสวยของวิวรับรองว่าไม่แพ้ที่ไหนๆ ขาดก็แต่กิจกรรมที่ให้ความสนุกบันเทิง นักท่องเที่ยวที่มาส่วนใหญ่จึงเป็นครอบครัว คู่รัก และผู้สูงอายุ ที่ต้องการการพักผ่อนหย่อนใจอย่างแท้จริง

We had dinner at La Darsena, a beautifully located restaurant just south of Tremezzo, the food and wine were pretty good, but the main ingredient here was the lake view at sunset: book early to get a table on the small terrace and you will not be disappointed.

มื้อพิเศษของทริปนี้อยู่ที่โรงแรม La Darsena ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ที่ริมทะเลสาปทางฝั่งเมือง Tremezzo เราจองโต๊ะที่ตรงระเบียงด้านนอก จึงได้เห็นและเอ็นจอยวิวทะเลสาปสุดโรแม๊นซ์ช่วงพระอาทิตย์ตก ร้านนี้แนะนำให้จองล่วงหน้านะคะ เพราะระเบียงเล็กมากๆ มีแค่ไม่กี่โต๊ะเอง มื้อนี้นอกจากจะได้ความโรแมนติกแล้วก็ยังมีกลิ่นอายของความอีโรติกโชยมาเบาๆ อาหารที่ว่ารสชาติอร่อยแล้ว บริกรหนุ่มที่มาดูแลโต๊ะเราก็แลดูน่าอร่อยไม่แพ้กัน แถมขณะทำงานฮีปลดกระดุมสามเม็ดโชว์กล้ามอกแน่นๆด้วยแล้วนั้น ป้าถึงกับใจละลาย สายตาจดจ้องไม่กระพริบ ไม่เป็นอันกินอันดื่ม ชมวิวของแถมเพลินจนคุณสามีแอบงอนไปตามระเบียบ

Next day we visited the Villa del Balbianello, which I would say was the highlight of this trip. Previously owned by the heir of a rich Italian family, this villa is now run by an association keen to preserve the historical and cultural meaning of this place.

The story of this palace dates back a few centuries, when a rich Cardinal built it on the site of a former monastery to use it as a place to study and pray; it then changed hands a few times before becoming the residence of the Italian explorer Guido Monzino. This villa now hosts an amazing collection of items from his exploration trips around the world, from Africa to the Himalaya and the North Pole.

Other than the artistic value of this place, the setting itself is pretty amazing. We had to take a speedboat to reach its secluded lakeside location, and we discovered the beautiful setting had been used to film blockbuster movies such as Star Wars and 007 Casino Royale.

ไฮไลท์ที่เราภูมิใจนำเสนอคือการไปเยือน Villa del Balbianello ที่นักท่องเที่ยวยังไม่รู้จักมากนัก วิลล่าพร้อมสวนสวยหลังนี้ได้ถูกใช้เป็นสถานที่ถ่ายทำหนังดังอย่าง Star Wars และ 007 Casino Royale มาแล้ว (การันตีถึงความไม่ธรรมดา!) ส่วนตัวแล้วเราได้ยินกิตติศัพท์มานาน จึงตั้งใจมาทะเลสาปโคโม่เพื่อแวะมาดูวิลล่านี้โดยเฉพาะเลยค่ะ การเดินทางไปมีสองวิธี สามารถทำได้ทั้งเดิน trekking ไปตามเนินเขา หรือจะนั่งเรือสปีดโบ้ทไปขึ้นจากริมฝั่งทะเลสาปก็ได้  เราขอแนะนำว่าเรือเป็นช้อยส์ที่ไม่เหนื่อยแล้วยังได้ชมวิวสวยเป็นของแถมด้วยค่ะ

นอกจากการเดินชมความสวยงามของตัววิลล่าและสวนรอบๆแล้ว เราสามารถซื้อตั๋วเข้าชมด้านในตัวอาคาร ซึ่งมีการจัดโชว์ของสะสมกึ่งพิพิธภัณฑ์ขนาดย่อมของเจ้าของคนสุดท้ายของวิลล่า ก่อนที่เขาจะส่งมอบวิลล่าหลังงามนี้ให้เป็นสมบัติของประเทศ (ใจดีจริงๆพ่อคุณ) เจ้าของคนสุดท้าย นาย Guido Monzino คือนักปีนเขาและนักสำรวจตัวยง เขาชอบออกเดินทางท่องโลกไปตามแหล่งภูเขาสูง จึงมีของสะสมหายากจากที่แปลกๆอย่าง แอฟริกา เทือกเขา หิมาลัย และ ขั้วโลกเหนือ

No trip to Lake Como is complete without a visit to Bellagio, so on the last day we took the ferry boat across the lake to visit this world famous town. The setting is certainly beautiful and the Grand Hotel reminds you of the past glory of this location, however we felt that the town has become a bit too touristy and the crowds are a sure way to remind you the days of posh escapes to the lake are over.

อย่างที่เกริ่นไว้ว่า Bellagio คือเมืองยอดนิยม ถ้ามา Lake Como โดยไม่ไปเยือน Bellagio ก็คงจะเหมือนมาไม่ถึงถิ่น วันๆหนึ่งจะมีเรือเฟอร์รี่ขนผู้โดยสารไปที่นั่นเป็นจำนวนมาก เราจึงแฝงตัวไปกับกลุ่มนักท่องเที่ยวเหล่านั้น (อันที่จริงเราก็เป็นนักท่องเที่ยวนี่เนอะ 555) เดินเล่น ช้อปปิ้ง จิบ Sprizt Aperol คือเป้าหมายของวันนี้ นับเป็นเมืองสวยของอิตาลีอีกเมืองค่ะ ถ้าหามุมสงบหลีกหนีจากทัวร์กรุ๊ปได้ ก็นับว่าบรรยากาศดีไม่น้อยเลย ตอนที่เราไปได้ข่าวว่าผู้หญิงบานฉ่ำ Julia Robert ก็กำลังพักผ่อนอยู่ที่เมืองนี้พอดีค่ะ

It was certainly a nice trip and a few interesting things to see, I am not sure I would recommend this area as an holiday destination, but if you happen to be around Milan and fancy an escape, do as the older generations used to do and drive to the lake for some relaxation and chilly weather, you will be rewarded with some great scenery.
