Here I am finally in Cuzco, the historic capital of the Incas from the 13th until the 16th century, when the Spanish took over and conquered the area. Arguably the most interesting city in the whole of South America if you ask an historian, it is now the touristic hub for many tourists that come to Peru and want to visit the city, the surrounding valleys and of course Machu Picchu.
Sitting at 3,400 meters above sea level, it is wise not to make Cuzco your first stop since many travelers might experience high altitude sickness with symptoms of dizziness, nausea and difficulty in sleeping; so I was glad I spent a few days on the Andes beforehand so once I arrived I could enjoy the city without troubles.
หลังจากที่ได้ไปเยือนเมืองลับแลในฝัน Machu Picchu และพิชิตยอดเขา Huayna Picchu เรารู้สึกถึงพลังงานดีๆที่ได้รับจากเทพมารดา Pachamama แห่งเทือกเขาแอนดีส อย่างที่เกริ่นไว้ว่าเรากำลังเที่ยวไต่ตามระดับความสูงเพื่อป้องกันอาการวิงเวียนขาดอากาศที่เกิดจาก altitude sickness สมบุกสมบันมาขนาดนี้ คิดว่าแกร่งพอที่จะมุ่งหน้าสู่ด่านต่อไป ซึ่งก็คือเมืองหลวงเก่าของชนเผ่าอินคาที่ตั้งอยู่สูงถึง 3,400 ม. เหนือระดับน้ำทะเล ในเมื่อกายพร้อม ใจพร้อม ชุดพร้อม ก็ไปกันเลยสิคะรออะไร?!
Cuzco ทำหน้าที่เป็นเมืองหลวงศูนย์กลางความเจริญของชาวอินคาแต่ครั้นศตวรรษที่ 13 – 16 ก่อนที่จะถูกรุกรานและตกไปอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของจักรวรรดิสเปน ณ เวลานั้น ชนเผ่าอินคาได้ชื่อว่าเป็นชนเผ่าที่มีอารยธรรมสูงส่ง แผ่ขยายอาณาจักรกว้างใหญ่ไพศาลและสร้างความเจริญรุ่งเรืองเป็นที่เลื่องลือ ไม่แปลกใจที่ใครๆต่างยกให้ Cuzco เป็นเมืองสำคัญที่สุดทางประวัติศาสตร์ของทวีปอเมริกาใต้ จนถึงปัจจุบัน Cuzco ก็ยังทำหน้าที่ได้อย่างดีไม่มีบกพร่อง เป็นเมืองหลักที่นักท่องเที่ยวใช้เป็นฐานพักและจุดเริ่มต้นในการออกเดินทางตามล่าหาฝันอารยธรรมอินคา
The city is in fact best enjoyed by foot, the hilly terrain does not make it easy at times, but there are plenty of quirky bars and nice shops where to stop and catch some breath if you wish to do so.
From my hotel Palacio del Inka, located in an historical building belonging to the Spanish era, it was a pleasant ten minute walk to the main square Plaza de Armas, the central part of town overlooked by a majestic cathedral. You can certainly see the Spanish influence in the architecture, since most of the town is very representative of the colonial times, with few Inca ruins scattered around but mostly just outside town.
Just off the main square I enjoyed walking along the so-called Gringo alley, or the street of the “white foreigner” as we would say, a very touristy but fun spot that with its bars and tourist agents served as backpacker central for the city.
สาเหตุที่นครคูซโคเป็นเมืองสุดโปรดปรานของนักท่องเที่ยวสไตล์แบ็คแพ็คเกอร์ ก็เพราะภูมิประเทศที่เป็นเนินเขาซะส่วนใหญ่ทำให้การสัญจรโดยรถเป็นไปได้ลำบาก การเดินเท้าจึงเหมาะที่สุด บวกกับสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวกระจายตัวอยู่โดยรอบ การที่ได้เดินสำรวจก็นับเป็นเรื่องสนุกและท้าทายอย่างหนึ่ง
จากโรงแรม Palacio del Inka ที่เราพัก เดินประมาณสิบนาทีก็มาถึง Plaza de Armas ซึ่งเป็นจัตุรัสสำคัญใจกลางเมือง มีโบสถ์หลังใหญ่ตั้งตระหง่าน เราจะเห็นถึงอิทธิพลของจักรวรรดิสเปนปกคลุมอยู่ทั่วไปหมด
ด้านหลังของจัตุรัสมีถนนสายเล็กๆที่คึกคักเป็นพิเศษ Gringo alley หรือ ถนนข้าวสารเวอร์ชั่นเปรู คือแหล่งที่พักอาศัยราคาย่อมเยาว์ ผับบาร์ ร้านนวด ร้านขายของและบริษัททัวร์ สำหรับฝรั่งหัวทองสายชิลล์นั่นเอง (คนเปรูเรียกฝรั่งว่า “กริงโก้”) เดินเล่นดูเพลินๆดีค่ะ แต่บอกเลยว่ายังห่างชั้นกับถนนข้าวสารบ้านเราอยู่หลายขุมนัก
There are also many museums and galleries for those who are interested in a deep understanding of the Inca traditions. Just across the hotel I visited the Church and convent of Santo Domingo, built by the Spanish on top of the former Inca’s Temple of the Sun — Qorikancha , which at the times was probably the most sacred place in the city. Inca believed Sun to be their God, and themselves to be descendants of the Sun. The ceremony to pay respect to the Sun is still in practice today.
Almost by chance I stumbled upon a small but very interesting museum dedicated to sacred, magical and medicinal plants. The connection between human and sacred has also been central to the Inca culture, and the use of plants is fundamental to open this connection, such as the powerful Ayahuasca which is still used by local shamans during sacred ceremonies that are gaining popularity also among visitors.
ความสนใจใคร่รู้เรื่องราวทางประวัติศาสตร์ นำเราไปยังสถานที่ที่หนึ่งซึ่งน่าจะเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นที่ดีที่สุดในการทำความรู้จักชนเผ่าผู้ร่ำรวยอารยธรรมอดีตผู้ครอบครองแผ่นดินทองนี้ Church and convent of Santo Domingo คือโบสถ์ที่ชาวสเปนสร้างทับบนซากวัดเก่าแก่ที่เชื่อกันว่าศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่สุดและเป็นสิ่งก่อสร้างทางศาสนาที่สำคัญสุดของชาวอินคาในยุคนั้น Temple of the Sun หรือ Qorikancha สร้างขึ้นจากความเชื่อที่ว่าชนเผ่าอินคาคือลูกพระอาทิตย์ และพระอาทิตย์เปรียบเสมือนพระเจ้าของพวกเขา สถานที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์แห่งนี้จึงถูกใช้เพื่อทำพิธีบูชาสุริยเทพ พิธีบูชานี้ยังคงสืบทอดมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน จัดขึ้นในช่วงเดือน มิ.ย. ของทุกปี นอกจากพิธีศักดิ์สิทธิ์ งานสถาปัตยกรรมฝีมือชนเผ่าอินคาก็เป็นที่โจษจันไม่น้อย ไม่น่าเชื่อว่าวัดแห่งนี้สร้างขึ้นในยุคพันปีก่อนที่จะมีเทคโนโลยีใดๆ
นครคูซโคมีพิพิธภัณฑ์น่าสนใจอีกแห่งหนึ่งที่เราเดินไปเจอโดยบังเอิญ บ้านหลังเล็กๆบนเนินคดเคี้ยวแห่งนี้ คือพิพิธภัณฑ์ชื่อเก๋ Museum of sacred, magical and medicinal plants จัดแสดงโชว์พืชพื้นเมืองที่ใช้ปรุงทำยาและใช้ในพิธีบูชาต่างๆ ชาวอินคาเชื่อในเรื่องสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ เทพเจ้า และภูตผี ไม่ต่างจากบ้านเรา เหลือบไปเห็น Ayahuasca (อายาวัสก้า) พืชไม้เลื้อยพื้นเมืองในแถบป่าอเมซอนใส่ห่อวางขายอยู่ จำได้ว่าเคยอ่านเกี่ยวกับทริปเข้าป่าเพื่อทำพิธีบำบัดด้วยการดื่มน้ำอายาวัสก้า ซึ่งนักท่องเที่ยวชาวตะวันตกจำนวนไม่น้อยให้ความสนใจและเดินทางมาเปรูเพื่อการนี้ ว่ากันว่าอายาวัสก้ามีสรรพคุณในการบำบัดอาการซึมเศร้า อาการติดเหล้า ติดยาเสพติด และรักษาโรคบางชนิดได้ แต่ยังไม่ใช่สิ่งถูกกฎหมายในหลายประเทศเพราะมีอาการข้างเคียง เช่น หลอนประสาทและอาเจียน การบำบัดหรือ Ayahuasca retreats จึงต้องอยู่ภายใต้การดูแลของผู้เชี่ยวชาญเท่านั้น
One day we took a taxi to the nearby town of Pisac, one of the highlights in the area and famous for its market. Leaving the city of Cuzco behind I realized how spread out it was, but mostly residential, in fact I later learnt that the only factory in the whole town is the local brewery Cusqueña, after all we all enjoy a fresh beer.
Pisac is a traditional village in the Urubamba valley that attracts many visitors, as such the market can at times feel overwhelming rather than authentic, however it is always a pleasure to get lost in the narrow alleys and watch so many colourful locals in their traditional dresses.
This day trip is also a great chance to enjoy some beautiful natural landscapes in the valley and visit the important Inca archeological sites of Saksaywaman, which sound very much like “sexy woman”.
Pisac (พิซัก) คืออีกหนึ่งเมืองสำคัญในบริเวณหุบเขา Urubamba valley เราเหมาแท๊กซี่ครึ่งวันให้พามาชมตลาดและซากอารยธรรมของอินคา (Pisac ruins) ตลาดพิซักมีชื่อเสียงอย่างมากในหมู่นักท่องเที่ยว เป็นตลาดขนาดใหญ่ที่เต็มไปด้วยร้านค้าขายของฝาก ของพื้นเมืองแฮนด์เมดและร้านอาหาร วันก่อนเราได้ลองชิมเมนูพื้นเมืองชื่อดังอย่าง “หนูตะเภาย่าง” ที่ตัดเอาเฉพาะแผ่นหลังย่างหนังกรอบคล้ายหมูหัน ยังติดใจในรสชาติที่ทั้งหอมทั้งกรอบ วันนี้มาเดินตลาดเจอกรงเลี้ยงหนูตะเภาขนาดใหญ่ ข้างๆมีเตาอบใส่ฟืนควันโขมง มองไปเห็นหนูตะเภาเสียบไม้ปิ้งเป็นตัวๆวางเต็มถาด ขุ่นพระ! นี่มันอุตสาหกรรมปิ้งหนูชัดๆ ทำกันเป็นล่ำเป็นสันขนาดนี้เชียว ส่วนตัวแล้วเราไม่แอนตี้นะคะ วัฒนธรรมการกินแต่ละถิ่นแต่ละประเทศย่อมไม่เหมือนกัน ใครใคร่ทานอะไรก็ทานกันไป โนดราม่า โนทุ่งลาเวนเดอร์ แต่ได้มาเห็นจะจะแบบนี้คงเข็ดไม่กล้าทานไปอีกนาน
วันถัดมาเรามีเวลาสำรวจแค่ครึ่งเช้า เพราะอยากจะพักผ่อนและใช้บริการสปาที่โรงแรม (สปาที่นี่ขึ้นชื่อและครบวงจรมากค่ะ) นั่งแท๊กซี่จากโรงแรมแค่ 20 นาทีก็มาถึงสถานที่สำคัญอีกแห่ง Saksaywaman หรือออกเสียงให้จำง่ายๆว่า Sexy-woman (จำได้ไม่ลืมเลยทีเนี้ย) ซากกำแพงเมืองเก่าในทุ่งกว้างที่มีฝูงอัลปาก้าเดินกินหญ้าอย่างสบายอุรา น้องอัลปาก้าอยู่ตามธรรมชาติก็จะมอมแมมนิดนึง ไม่ขาวนุ่มขนปุยเหมือนที่เดินๆให้คนมาถ่ายรูปด้วยในเมือง ลูกคุณไม่ได้น่ารักสำหรับทุกคนฉันใด อัลปาก้าก็ไม่ได้น่ารักทุกตัวฉันนั้น
The great thing about Cuzco is the local food scene, with great restaurants where to enjoy a tasteful meal after a long day exploring.
From very simple and traditional bars serving empanadas, to more sophisticated restaurants run by famous chefs, there are many dishes to try from the local cuisine, from the ever present lomo saltado (a fusion dish with meat, vegetables and rice) to alpaca meat if you fancy something unusual.
I had some of the best ceviche in a great restaurants overlooking the main square, and I also challenged myself by eating oven roasted guinea pigs, a local delicacy that is too cute when alive but also very yummy on the plate.
พูดถึงอาหารการกิน นอกจากเมนูสุดพิศดารอย่างหนูตะเภาย่าง ย่านนี้ยังมีอาหารพื้นเมืองที่น่าสนใจอีกหลายชนิด ไม่ว่าจะเป็นอาหารเบสิคที่หาทานได้ทั่วไปอย่าง empanadas พายที่มีหน้าตาเหมือนกะหรี่ปั๊บ หรือ ceviche (เซบิเช่) ยำปลาดิบสไตล์เปรู แอดว๊านซ์ขึ้นมาหน่อยก็ต้องเมนูสเต๊กเนื้อกระทะร้อน lomo saltado ที่เสิร์ฟมาพร้อมข้าวสวยและผัก หรือใครที่ชอบของแปลกประจำท้องถิ่นขอแนะนำให้สั่ง “สเต๊กสันในอัลปาก้า” ให้รู้แล้วรู้รอดไปเลย (เคล็ดลับ: เวลาทานให้จินตนาการถึงตัวที่ไม่น่ารัก)
Fallen Angel was my favourite spot to have a drink, a surreal environment where I could not stop taking pictures, if not to sip some of the great Pisco sour they made. Thanks to my local friend Andres who recommended us this hidden fantasy side of Peru.
Walking through its doors where like stepping into a different planet, such was the contrast from the city vibes and the otherworldly decorations of this bar. Luckily from most of the places I went at night, the walk back to the hotel was downhill, the proof that careful planning always pays off.

(เสียงอาจารย์เฉลิมชัย) เอาอ่างอาบน้ำใส่ปลาว่ายมาทำเป็นโต๊ะกระจก มีหุ่นชุดเกราะติดปีกตัวเบ้อเร่อตั้งอยู่กลางร้าน เพดานห้อยระย้าทั้งลูกดิสโก้เอยโคมกระดาษเอย เรานั่งจิบค็อกเทลเย็นๆพลางกวาดตามองไปรอบๆครุ่นคิดหาที่มาที่ไปของคอนเซ็ปท์ร้านอย่างไม่ลดละ จะว่าไป pisco sour เค้าก็รสชาติดีสมราคาคุยจริงๆ
ทริปเจาะเวลาหาอดีตย้อนรอยอินคาก็ได้ปิดฉากลงอย่างสวยงามสมการรอคอย งานนี้นอกจากจะได้ความรู้ทางประวัติศาสตร์เพิ่มเติมแล้วยังได้เปิดหูเปิดตาไปกับประสบการณ์ใหม่ๆ จุดหมายถัดไปและเป็นที่หมายสุดท้ายของทริป เราดั้นด้นไปไกลถึง “ทะเลสาปที่อยู่สูงที่สุดในโลก” ปีนเขาลุยป่ามาเยอะแล้วคราวนี้ลองเปลี่ยนบรรยากาศมาล่องเรือเที่ยวกันดูบ้างค่ะ
