Sorrento coast: the fine art of good life

Upon arrival at Naples airport, we took our rental car and drove straight away southbound. Having visited the city just few months before, I did not have any real interest in sightseeing again so my plan was to explore the famous area just one hour drive away.

This hilly peninsula is located just south of the volcano Vesuvius, and has gained the attention of tourists thanks to the beautiful sceneries and picture-perfect seaside villages.

The northern part of the peninsula is called the Sorrento Coast, while the more famous southern area is the Amalfi Coast, both named after their respective biggest towns.

ปีที่แล้วเมื่อต้นปีได้มีโอกาสตามคุณสามีมาทำงานที่ Naples หรือ Napoli เมืองใหญ่ทางตอนใต้ของอิตาลี ช่วงเย็นขณะที่แวะไปเดินเล่นริมทะเลแถวปราสาท Castel dell’Ovo เกิดสะดุดตากับแสงไฟสว่างไสวจากเมืองที่อยู่อีกฝั่งทะเล พลันนึกสงสัยแต่ไม่ทันได้เอ่ยปาก คุณสามีผู้เปรียบเสมือน google map ส่วนตัว รีบรุดมาชี้แจงแถลงไขว่าที่เห็นนั่นน่ะคือ Sorrento Coast ชายฝั่งมีชื่ออีกแห่งของที่นี่แต่ไม่ได้เป็นที่รู้จักเหมือนกับ Amalfi Coast จากความประทับใจครั้งนั้นเลยฝังใจว่าสักวันจะต้องหาโอกาสแวะไปยลเมืองสวยนอกเรดาร์แห่งนี้ให้จงได้ 

Sorrento Coast คือชายฝั่งยาวที่อยู่ทางตอนเหนือ ของแหลมเพนนินซูล่า ส่วนชายฝั่งทางใต้นั้นคือ Amalfi Coast หนึ่งในเมืองยอดฮิตติดโปรแกรมทัวร์ของอิตาลี ชื่อของทั้งสองชายฝั่งนั้นถูกตั้งตามชื่อเมืองขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในละแวก ด้วยความรักพี่เสียดายน้อง ทริปนี้เราจึงแพลนจะไปเยือนทั้งเหนือ-ใต้ให้ครบจบกระบวนความ 

Our first spot would be the town of Sorrento, on the northern side. Very popular with local people as well, it has a very pretty historic centre with small roads where I enjoyed walking and people watching.

The old centre pretty much ends with a cliff, so at the end of the road there is a large terrace where most people stop to enjoy the view of the gulf of Naples, the small beaches just below or indulge in the favorite local activity: having a coffee. 

My impression was that most of the people hanging around the city centre were tourists, while all the local people were down by the sea enjoying the first hot days of the summer. 

เริ่มสตาร์ทที่เมือง Sorrento ใจกลางเมืองเป็น historic centre เก่าแก่ เต็มไปด้วยตรอกซอกซอยเล็กๆ ปูพื้นถนนด้วยหินก้อนกรวดขนาดใหญ่ เราเดินทอดน่องดูโบสถ์ ร้านค้า และผู้คน ตามตรอกเล็กตรอกน้อยไปเรื่อยเปื่อย จนมาถึงสุดทางซึ่งเป็นเหมือนระเบียงกว้างริมหน้าผา จุดนี้เป็นจุดชมวิวหลักของเมือง Sorrento ที่ซึ่งเราจะได้เห็นวิวสวยของอ่าว Gulf of Naples และชายหาดริมฝั่ง นอกจากการนอนอาบแดดและว่ายน้ำแล้ว ดูเหมือนว่า “การนั่งดื่มกาแฟชิลล์ๆริมหาด” จะเป็นกิจกรรมยอดนิยมอีกอย่างของผู้มาเยือน

เป็นที่สังเกตุว่า ในย่านเมืองเก่า historic centre นั้นมีนักท่องเที่ยวมากมายหลายเชื้อชาติเดินกันให้ขวักไขว่ ในขณะที่ครอบครัวชาวอิตาลีและยุโรปทางใต้ส่วนใหญ่ปักหลักกันอยู่ที่บริเวณชายหาด เพื่อเอ็นจอยแสงแดดในวันเริ่มต้นฤดูร้อนแห่งปี (ต่างคนต่างใจสนุกกันไปคนละแบบ)

As we walked around, looking through a small stone gate I spotted the manicured garden of the Artis Domus Relais, it was the prefect place to relax for a few minutes and chill down with a cold drink before walking down to the harbor side looking for a place to eat.

On the way down we passed by many interesting corners, watching people working and elderly locals sitting on their chair just watching the world passing by.

The seafood restaurant we found was built over floating rafts, giving me a real feel of the sea breeze, and satisfying my hunger with an amazingly good seafood pasta, the fact they had my favorite sea urchin in their menu is always a big bonus. 

ขณะกำลังมองหาที่นั่งพักจิบน้ำเย็นๆคลายร้อน เราก็ได้เดินมาเจอกับสถานที่พิเศษแห่งนี้โดยบังเอิญ Artis Domus Relais คือโรงแรมที่ซ่อนตัวอยู่หลังรั้วหิน ด้านในเป็นสวนกว้าง เปิดบริการเป็นร้านอาหารกึ่งคาเฟ่ ตกแต่งสไตล์ contemporary art ดูจากนอกรั้วทีแรกแอบนึกว่าเป็นบ้านศิลปินหรือพิพิธภัณฑ์ขนาดย่อมซะอีกค่ะ ร่มเงาของต้นไม้ใหญ่ให้ความรู้สึกร่มรื่นผ่อนคลายจนลืมไปเลยว่าใกล้เวลาเที่ยงแล้ว 

พอพักหายเหนื่อยก็พากันเดินลงจากผาไปยังสุดหาด ระหว่างทางได้เห็นวิถีชีวิตเรียบง่ายของชาวบ้านซึ่งประกอบอาชีพประมงเป็นหลัก มาถึงถิ่นชาวประมงเราจึงมุ่งมั่นจะไปทานมื้อกลางวันที่ร้านอาหารบนแพ แต่ไม่ใช่แพไม้ไผ่แบบบ้านเรานะคะ คนที่นี่เค้าใช้แผ่นพลาสติกต่อเป็นแผงทางเดินยาว ดูแน่นหนา ไม่โคลงเคลงยามคลื่นซัด ด้วยความที่มีให้เลือกหลายร้านเราจึงสุ่มเลือกเอาร้านที่มีตู้ปลาสวยที่สุด (ประมาณว่าดูมีความใส่ใจที่สุดว่างั้น?!) และนับเป็นโชคที่เขามีเมนู “สปาเก็ตตี้ไข่หอยเม่น” สุดโปรดของเราซะด้วย เมนูนี้ไม่ได้หาทานง่ายๆนะคะ เป็นเมนูเฉพาะทางตอนใต้ของอิตาลีแต่ก็ไม่ใช่จะมีทุกร้าน (หวานปากที่ซู้ดดด!)

After this very enjoyable visit, we made our way to Don Alfonso 1890, a Relais & Chateaux boutique hotel housing a two-Michelin star restaurant. Planned as one of the highlight of our trip, this lovely place located in Massa Lubrense, a small village on top of the hill certainly did not disappoint. I felt welcome straight away thanks to the sincere hospitality of the host, and taken to a beautiful room decorated with quirky pastel colors.

The main restaurant was fully booked for the night, which is not a surprised given the fact this is probably the best fine-dining establishment in the region.

และเป็นอีกครั้งที่เราเลือกพักกันที่โรงแรมในเครือของ Relais & Chateaux โรงแรม Don Alfonso 1890 เป็นโรงแรมของตระกูล Iaccarino ที่บริหารสืบต่อกันมาหลายชั่วอายุ ตั้งอยู่ที่เมือง Massa Lubrense เมืองขนาดเล็กบนเนินเขา นักท่องเที่ยวไม่จอแจ  โรงแรมนี้มีร้านอาหารดังพ่วงดีกรีมิชลินสองดาวชื่อเดียวกันกับโรงแรม Don Alfonso 1890 ที่กูรูนักชิมทั้งหลายต่างยกให้เป็นร้านอาหารที่ดีที่สุดในแคว้น Campania แห่งนี้เลย 

โรงแรมในครอบครัวไม่เคยทำให้ผิดหวังในเรื่องการบริการและความเอาใจใส่จริงๆค่ะ นอกจากนั้นแล้วห้องพักสีลูกกวาดพาสเทลยังทำเอาเรายิ้มกว้าง เพราะนานๆทีจะเจอโรงแรมหรูที่กล้าจัดเต็มความหวานขนาดนี้ 

The tasting menu was mostly fish based, and once again the family running the place was present in the room making sure everything would be smooth and enjoyable for us. We were also taken to explore the wine cellar, which was an experience on its own. A cave dating back to the pre-Roman times happened to be found just underneath and quite possibly used back then to store wine too.

The perfect example of using old traditional methods to satisfy our modern needs: this cave is perfectly suited to age the several thousand bottles of fine wine stored for the enjoyment of wine lovers.

I wonder if the original builders could have ever dreamt that their effort would still be appreciated over two thousand years later: cheers to them!

ก่อนมื้ออาหารพิเศษพนักงานได้พาเราลงไปชมห้องเก็บไวน์ใต้ดินเป็นการเรียกน้ำย่อย ความมืดและความชื้นเป็นตัวแปรสำคัญช่วยให้ไวน์คงรสชาติดีและเก็บได้นาน คนสมัยก่อนจึงนิยมทำห้องถ้ำใต้ดินเพื่อเก็บไวน์โดยเฉพาะ ที่นี่มีไวน์ชั้นดีที่เหล่านักชิมไวน์หมายจ้องจะลิ้มลองอยู่นับพันขวด แต่ที่ทำเอาเราทึ่งกว่านั้นคือห้องใต้ดินแห่งนี้ถูกสร้างขึ้นมากว่าสองพันปีแล้วค่ะ!! 

ที่ห้องอาหารเราสั่งคอร์ส tasting menu ที่เน้นเมนูปลาเพื่อสุขภาพ ทางร้านยังใช้วัตถุดิบท้องถิ่นซึ่งส่วนใหญ่ส่งตรงมาจากสวนผักออแกนิคปลอดสารของทางโรงแรมเอง (ทำได้ครบวงจรจริงๆ) พอถึงจานสุดท้าย หนึ่งในลูกชายของตระกูลที่เป็นคนดูแลห้องอาหารนี้ เดินมากระซิบบอกเราทั้งคู่ให้กินมะนาวลูกใหญ่ที่อยู่ในจานของหวานเข้าไปทั้งเปลือกเลย หลอกกันเล่นรึเปล่า?! ถึงจะลังเลแต่ก็ลองทำตามแต่โดยดี สรุปว่ากินไปกินมากินหมดทั้งลูก! ก็มันทั้งหอมทั้งนุ่ม ไม่มีรสฝาดเลยสักนิด ใครจะอดใจอยู่

The following morning, we once again enjoyed the great breakfast served just by the main restaurant, their home-made pastries were so delicious I could not resist trying them all, one of those days I should rather skip lunch.

The receptionist made sure we did not forget anything and also gave us a little present before we left. Very kindly the lady owner wanted to speak to us by phone, making once again sure we had a good stay and wishing us a great holiday: those small kind gestures are rare nowadays and we appreciated her effort very much.

I was rested, relaxed and well fed, surely ready to explore the Amalfi Coast.

อาหารเช้าที่นี่อลังการงานสร้างมาก ทุกอย่างเสิร์ฟขึ้นโต๊ะในถ้วยชามสีหวานพาสเทลตามคอนเซปท์ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นขนมปังอบใหม่หอมกรุ่น โยเกิร์ต home-made เมนูไข่ และผลไม้สดปลอดสารจากสวน ขนาดคนไม่ทานมื้อเช้าอย่างเรายังกินไม่หยุดฉุดไม่อยู่ กลายเป็นมื้อที่ประทับใจที่สุดของทริปไปซะอย่างนั้น (ไหนๆก็หลวมตัวมาขนาดนี้จัดเผื่อมื้อกลางวันไปเลยละกัน) 

เสียดายเวลามีน้อยเลยได้ค้างที่นี่แค่คืนเดียว ชอบการใช้สีตกแต่งและบรรยากาศในสวนริมสระว่ายน้ำของโรงแรมมากๆเลยค่ะ ว่าแล้วก็ขนสัมภาระขึ้นรถสเมิร์ฟน้อยหอยสังข์ (รถเช่าคันจิ๋วสีฟ้าน้ำทะเลที่คุณสาไม่ปลื้มแต่เราว่าน่ารักออกจะตาย) ก่อนอำลามาดามใหญ่เจ้าของโรงแรมมีการต่อสายตรงมาขอบคุณ แถมยังมีเส้นสปาเก็ตตี้กับซอส home-made ให้เป็นของฝากติดมือกลับบ้านอีกด้วย บริการมีระดับประทับใจจนวินาทีสุดท้ายแบบนี้ จะไม่ให้ชมเปาะได้ไง!
