Dubai, the megacity in the sand, a place that evokes very different reactions to different people. For some it is paradise, a modern, sleek and luxurious corner in a very dry and unwelcoming desert landscape; for others it is hell, a fake, pretentious, traffic-ridden city built along a multi-lane desert highway.
So when my husband proposed a trip there, I could not resist the temptation to go and have a look myself. I have used it a few times as a transit for my trips between Europe and Thailand, so I thought it would be nice to get out of the airport and explore the area a bit more.
ลองนั่งคิดคำจำกัดความของเมือง Dubai เล่นๆแต่ดันคิดไม่ออกซะนี่ อาจเพราะความเห็นของผู้ที่เคยไปเยือนค่อนข้างหลากหลาย บ้างก็ชื่นชมในความพยายามอย่างหนักที่จะเนรมิตตึกระฟ้ามหานครขึ้นกลางทะเลทราย พลางหลงใหลได้ปลื้มไปกับความหรูหราของมนตราอาหรับ บ้างก็เบ้ปากใส่ในความเฟค ของปลอมก็คือของปลอม ดูยังไงก็ขัดอารมณ์สุนทรีชาตินี้ไม่ขอเห็นดีเห็นงาม
แต่ก่อนนั้นสำหรับเราตะวันออกกลางถือว่าเป็นทวีปนอกสายตา คนใกล้ตัวที่เคยไปเที่ยวมีน้อยคนมาก เมืองแขกจะมีอะไรน่าสนใจ? มีแต่ทะเลทรายไม่ร้อนแย่เหรอ? แล้วเราต้องใส่ชุดดำคลุมหัวจรดเท้าแบบเขาไหม? ไหนจะอาหารการกินอีกล่ะ? คำถามมากมายประดังอยู่ในหัว ทำให้ยังลังเลไม่กล้าไปซักที จนมาถึงวันที่คุณสามีออกปากชวนด้วยท่าทีอันกระตือรือร้นและสนอกสนใจจนทำเอาเราหวั่นไหวไปตาม จึงตอบตกลง say yes ไปทั้งๆที่ยังงงๆอยู่ไม่รู้ว่าจะได้เจอกับอะไร และทริปดูไบของเราก็ได้เริ่มต้นด้วยประการฉะนี้
The city runs along the main motorway from north to south, the airport being located on the northern end, and actually very close to the historical centre of Dubai, the Dubai Creek. It was here that this city started to develop many years ago as a trading hub in the Persian Gulf; the architecture is certainly very different from the modern areas further south, where the big oil money and real estate developers have teamed up to pursue their urban dreams.
Being Friday the Old souk was mostly empty, but it was a good chance to walk around and get a feel for this more authentic part of Dubai, mostly overlooked by international tourists. I admit that seeing those wooden boats, called dhows, moored in the wharf I started to feel the romance of the life of those ancient traders, with the smell of spices and the value of precious stones carried onboard.
Dubai คือเมืองหลวงของประเทศสาธารณรัฐอาหรับเอมิเรตส์ (UAE) และเป็นเมืองศูนย์กลางทางด้านเศรษฐกิจของตะวันออกกลางที่มีค่าครองชีพแพงติดอันดับโลก ตัวเมืองขนาบอยู่สองข้างถนนมอเตอร์เวย์เส้นยาวที่วิ่งจากเหนือลงใต้ ทางตอนเหนือเป็นที่ตั้งของสนามบินและ Dubai Creek เวิ้งน้ำทะเลธรรมชาติจากอ่าวเปอร์เซียที่แบ่งเมืองออกเป็นสองส่วน ในยุคที่การค้ารุ่งเรือง ตรงท่าเรือนี้เคยเป็นจุดนัดพบของบรรดาพ่อค้าจากทุกสารทิศ บรรยากาศฝั่ง Bur Dubai ส่วนเก่าแก่กว่าของเมืองยังคงความคลาสสิค พอได้เห็นวิถีชีวิตแบบชาวบ้าน ไม่มีตึกสูงระฟ้าเหมือนทางฝั่ง Deira Dubai ทำให้เผลอจินตนาการไปถึงภาพเรือไม้ลำใหญ่ถูกบรรจุเต็มด้วยเครื่องเทศ เครื่องหอม และของมีค่า ลำแล้วลำเล่าสลับกันแล่นเข้าออกที่ท่าเรือแห่งนี้ น่าเสียดายที่ย่านนี้ยังไม่เป็นที่รู้จักมากนักในหมู่นักท่องเที่ยว
เช้าวันนั้นเป็นวันศุกร์ เราเดินลัดเลาะต่อไปยังละแวกตลาดเก่า Old souk ที่อยู่ใกล้ๆ ด้วยเป็นวันหยุดพักผ่อนของชาวเมือง ร้านรวงจึงต่างปิดประตูเงียบกริบ ถึงงานจะกร่อยไปนิด แต่คิดอีกทีได้เดินเล่นดูเมืองแบบเงียบๆก็ได้อรรถรสไปอีกแบบ
Driving south the skyline starts to change dramatically, with the mighty Burj Khalifa always present in the horizon, a sure landscape to help you find the direction when navigating this huge city. At 828 meter-high, it is the tallest building in the World, and it is a must-do here to take the lift to their observation point, which is actually just over half-way up. Only the rich owners of some private apartments can enjoy the view from the top, but the observation point is still incredibly high and great way to understand the way this city was built.
There is an interesting story about this building, initially called Burj Dubai, meaning tower of Dubai, had its name changed after the ruler of neighboring oil-rich Abu Dhabi, sheik Khalifa al-Nahyan, transferred huge sums of money to help Dubai during the financial crisis. This tower is part of a complex that include the World’s largest shopping centre, the Dubai Mall, where many locals enjoy spending their afternoon.
พอขับมุ่งลงใต้ ฟีลลิ่งชักเริ่มเปลี่ยน วิวที่เห็นกลับกลายเป็นตึกสูงหน้าตาดูทันสมัยผุดขึ้นราวกับดอกเห็ด ที่สะดุดตาที่สุดต้องยกให้ตึก Burj Khalifa กับความสูง 828 เมตร พ่วงดีกรีตำแหน่งตึกสูงที่สุดในโลก ณ ปัจจุบัน แต่เดิมตึกนี้มีชื่อว่า Burj Dubai ที่มีความหมายตรงตัวว่า “ตึกของดูไบ” แต่ใครจะเชื่อว่าเมืองมหาเศรษฐีอย่างดูไบเกิดอาการชักหน้าไม่ถึงหลัง จนต้องขอหยิบยืมทุนทรัพย์จากท่านชีค Sheik Khalifa al-Nahyan แห่งนคร Abu Dhabi เพื่อนบ้าน ท่านชีคบอกว่าที่ขอมาน่ะเศษเงินทั้งนั้น เอาไปเลยเท่าที่สบายใจ มีข้อแม้อย่างเดียวว่าตึกนี้ต้องเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “ตึกของ Khalifa” หรือ Burj Khalifa ไม่ใช่ตึกของดูไบอีกต่อไป เข้าใจตรงกันนะ
แล้วบนตึกสูงเสียดฟ้าแห่งนี้มีอะไรให้ทำบ้าง? แน่นอนอย่างแรกต้องขึ้นลิฟท์ไปจุดชมวิวที่ชั้น 124 ถึงจะอยู่แค่ครึ่งทางความสูงของตึก แต่ก็รับประกันว่าได้เห็นวิวเมืองสวยสมใจ และสำหรับคนที่ชอบดื่มด่ำความอร่อยไปพร้อมชมวิว เขาก็มีร้านอาหารอยู่ที่ชั้น 122 ไว้บริการ (ต้องจองล่วงหน้านะคะ) ที่ด้านล่างของตึกยังเป็นห้างสรรพสินค้าขนาดใหญ่ขวัญใจขาช้อปอย่าง Dubai Mall ส่วนไฮไลท์ที่ห้ามพลาดคือการแสดงโชว์น้ำพุเต้นระบำประกอบดนตรีแสงสีเสียง Dubai Fountain แนะนำให้มาดูตอนค่ำๆเพราะยิ่งมืดไฟยิ่งสวยค่ะ
The next neighborhood is the one we chose for our stay: Jumeirah is a more relaxed and residential area that enjoys a very long stretch of beach, so the Al-Qasr Madinat Jumeirah was our choice for a luxurious and comfortable stay. The hotel is definitely impressive, the service possibly some of the best I ever experienced, despite the huge size of this building. There is a mall next door, and a complimentary boat service in the artificial lagoon is a quick and enjoyable way to reach it.
The beach is actually better than I expected and it offers a great view of the Burj al-Arab, one of the World’s most iconic hotels shaped like the sail of a boat.
เราพักที่โรงแรมระดับห้าดาว Al-Qasr Madinat Jumeirah ตั้งอยู่ในย่านอยู่อาศัย Jumeirah ที่ค่อนข้างเงียบสงบ ขับเข้าประตูมาจะเจอรูปปั้นของฝูงม้าสีทองรอต้อนรับอยู่ ตัวโรงแรมเป็นอาคารหลังใหญ่ที่ด้านในดูหรูหราไม่ยิ่งหย่อนไปกว่าภายนอก ห้องพักโอ่อ่าสวยงามสมราคา และต้องขอยกนิ้วให้กับการบริการที่แสนจะเยี่ยมยอด ถัดจากโรงแรมคือ Madinat Jumeirah ห้างขนาดเล็กหน้าตาแฟนตาซีสไตล์อาหรับที่มีลากูนฝีมือมนุษย์สร้างล้อมรอบ จากโรงแรมมีทางเชื่อมให้เดินทะลุไป หรือจะนั่งเรือรับส่งที่เขามีบริการไว้ก็ได้ แอบกระซิบว่าห้างนี้มีทั้งร้านอาหารและร้านขายของพื้นเมืองแขกเก๋ๆเยอะเชียวค่ะ
ดูไบก็มีทะเล! หาดส่วนตัวของโรงแรมวิวสวยไม่เบา เราเลยชวนกันเดินเล่นทอดน่องไปตามหาดยาว ตึกหน้าตาเหมือนใบเรือที่เห็นเด่นสะดุดตาตรงสุดหาด คือโรงแรม Burj al-Arab ที่เขาบอกว่าห้าดาวมันยังน้อยไป หรูระดับนี้เขาเรียกเจ็ดดาวเจ้าค่า! ไหนจะวิวของ The Palm Jumeirah ลิบๆตรงหน้าที่มีแบ๊คกราวด์เป็นแสงสีส้มทองตอนช่วงพระอาทิตย์ตก ต้องบอกว่าสวยเกินคาด! ชักจะไขว้เขวแอบเผลอใจให้ดูไบแล้วสิเรา
The Palm Jumeirah is nowadays the best proof of the huge ambition of the ruling family: an artificial peninsula that from the sky looks just like a palm tree.
At top of this “palm tree” a gigantic hotel complex called Atlantis has become famous worldwide for its aquarium in the lobby, where sharks and mantas swim to the joy of the many families and kids that come here to have a look. The Disney-like feel of this hotel is not what we came here for, because I heard great reviews about their chinese-inspired Yuan restaurant, so since I was craving for some Asian food I made sure I had a table booked for dinner.
คนที่นี่เขาไม่ได้แค่สร้างตึกสูงระฟ้าเท่านั้นแต่ยังทำเกาะเทียมขึ้นมาอีกด้วย! Palm Jumeirah คือเกาะที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นด้วยน้ำมือมนุษย์ รูปร่างเหมือนต้นปาล์มถ้ามองจากมุมสูง บนเกาะนี้เป็นที่ตั้งของ Atlantis โรงแรมอภิมหาเมกะโปรเจค ที่มีอควอเรียมอยู่กลางล๊อบบี้ และมีสวนสนุกเป็นตัวดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยวกลุ่มครอบครัว ถึงจะไม่ใช่กลุ่มเป้าหมาย เราก็แอบชะแว่บไปดูฉลามกับปลากระเบนกะเค้ามาเหมือนกันค่ะ (ฮ่าๆ) โรงแรมนี้เขาจัดเต็มจริงๆ บรรยากาศเสมือนหนึ่งอยู่ในโลกใต้น้ำของ Disney world นี่ลึกๆก็แอบหวังจะได้เจอ Little mermaid คาแรคเตอร์ขวัญใจ
ออกจากโลกจินตนาการกลับสู่ความเป็นจริง ที่ดั้นด้นกันมาถึงที่นี่แท้จริงแล้วคือเรื่องกินล้วนๆตามคอนเซ็ปท์มนุษย์สายกิน Yuan คือร้านอาหารจีนสไตล์ contemporary ที่ดูสวยลึกลับ และมีบาร์สีเหลืองอำพันเป็นจุดเด่นกลางร้าน เป็นมื้ออาหารจีนในแสงสลัว ที่ทั้งอาหารและ cocktail ดีงามให้สามผ่านค่ะ
Dubai Marina is the last interesting neighborhood before leaving the city southern borders; built around the yatch harbor, it has a very modern skyline and somehow reminded me of Singapore. There are many restaurants and bars here, and it seems to be one of the favorites places for nightlife.
But partying with this hot weather was not on my agenda, instead we settled for an easier evening dining at Indego by Vineet, the Dubai restaurant of award-winning Indian chef Vineet Bhatia.
Dubai Marina คืออีกหนึ่งย่านทันสมัยติดท่าเรือยอร์ชที่ทำให้นึกไปถึงสิงคโปร์ ยามค่ำคืนจะเห็นหนุ่มสาวออกมาสังสรรค์ปาร์ตี้ เพราะย่านนี้มีทั้งร้านอาหารและบาร์ชื่อดังมากมาย เราจองดินเนอร์ที่ร้าน Indego by Vineet โดยเชฟมากฝีมือชาวอินเดีย Vineet Bhatia คุณสามีเป็นแฟนพันธุ์แท้อาหารอินเดียค่ะ ไปที่ไหนนางก็จะขวนขวายหาร้านดีๆมาแนะนำประจำ
ความประทับใจแรกคือรสนิยมในการแต่งร้าน จากประตูทางเข้าเขาทำเป็นล๊อบบี้เล็กๆ พนักงานจะเชิญเราไปนั่งรอที่โซฟาทรงครึ่งวงกลมกลางร้าน เสิร์ฟเครื่องดื่มต้อนรับ ก่อนที่จะพาเข้าห้องด้านในไปที่โต๊ะอาหาร อาหารที่นี่รสชาติดีเยี่ยม เห็นถึงความตั้งใจปรุงแต่งอย่างละเมียดละไม ที่สำคัญขนมอร่อยมีรสหวานกำลังดี หายากนะคะร้านอาหารอินเดียที่มีของหวานรสกลมกล่อมไม่หวานแสบคอ นับเป็นครั้งแรกที่เราเอ่ยปากชมเปาะ และขอยื่นใบสมัครเป็นแฟนพันธุ์แท้อาหารอินเดียด้วยอีกคน
Driving northbound we crossed the border between Dubai and the city of Sharjah, to then leave the urban landscape behind heading towards the emirate of Ras al Kahimah. The road is nothing to get excited for, but when we left the motorway we entered a more picturesque part of desert where the Banyan Tree Al Wadi desert resort is located.
Amid sand dunes populated by groups of oryx, this luxury hotel provides different pool villas to relax, and the signature restaurant is Thai, an added bonus for me! The desert heat at the end of September was grueling, with 42°C and high humidity, so our private pool was where I spent most of the time. At sunset though, when the temperature became more bearable, I really enjoyed the rooftop bar for a cool drink and romantic views of the dunes.
มาถึงเมืองทะเลทรายแล้วไม่ไปทะเลทรายก็คงกระไรอยู่ วันนี้พากันฝ่าความร้อน 42 องศา ขับขึ้นเหนือไปยังแคว้น Ras al Kahimah จุดหมายของเราอยู่ที่รีสอร์ทกลางทะเลทราย Banyan Tree Al Wadi ในรีสอร์ทดูคล้ายกับหมู่บ้านหมู่บ้านหนึ่งที่เต็มไปด้วยบ้านเดี่ยวพร้อมสระว่ายน้ำส่วนตัว มันคือบ้านพักแบบ pool villa ค่ะ สระว่ายน้ำส่วนตัวในวันที่อากาศฮอทปรอทแตกแบบนี้นับว่าเป็นไอเดียสุดบรรเจิด ว่าแล้วก็แช่น้ำวนไปสิคะ!
พอพระอาทิตย์ทำท่าจะลาลับขอบฟ้าเราจึงเริ่มมองหากิจกรรมนอกบ้านพัก จัดแจงโทรเรียกรถ buggy มารับเพราะรีสอร์ทค่อนข้างกว้าง (ไม่ได้ขี้เกียจเลยจริงๆ) ระหว่างทางเจอกับฝูง oryx ที่มีทีท่ากระฟัดกระเฟียดเวลาเราขับเข้าไปใกล้ มันคือเจ้าถิ่นที่นี่ค่ะ ถนนเป็นของเขาเรามันแค่ผู้อาศัย ก็เลยต้องให้ทางพี่เขาก่อนตามมารยาท ขับต่อมาก็เจออีกกลุ่มนึงกำลังนอนชิลล์อยู่ที่ริมสระน้ำกลางรีสอร์ท ชอบจริงๆรีสอร์ทที่มีสัตว์พื้นเมืองอาศัยอยู่ในบริเวณ
Buggy มาส่งเราที่บาร์ซึ่งเป็นตึกทรงเหลี่ยมเตี้ยๆ และแนะนำให้นั่งดริ้งค์ชิลล์ๆพร้อมชมวิวพระอาทิตย์ตกบนดาดฟ้า อากาศเริ่มเย็นลง ฟ้ากลายเป็นโทนสีอุ่น และมีแค่เราสองคนอย่างกับเป็นดาดฟ้าส่วนตัว! สวีทกันพองามก็ได้เวลาอาหารเย็น คนขับ buggy หนุ่มคนเดิมขับพาไปส่งที่ร้านอาหารที่ถือเป็น signature ของรีสอร์ทนี้ และมันคือร้านอาหารไทยค่าาา (ฮูเล่!) รสชาติอาจไม่ออริจินัล 100% แต่ก็ฟาดกันเรียบไม่มีเหลือ
My opinion about Dubai: definitely an interesting city, I would not come here for a week-long holiday but it is worth a visit, if only to discover what money and ambitions can create in the middle of the desert. It is also worth exploring the region a bit more, the desert is far from boring and offers many exciting activities.
จากการไปพิสูจน์ด้วยตัวเอง เราว่าดูไบเป็นเมืองที่น่าสนใจมากทีเดียว อาจจะไม่เหมาะนักกับทริปพักผ่อนยาวๆ แต่ก็อยากแนะนำให้ทุกคนจดใส่ไว้ในลิสต์ และหาเวลาลองมาเยี่ยมชมเมืองอภิมหาเศรษฐีกลางทะเลทรายแห่งนี้ดู บอกเลยว่ามันเว่อร์ได้ใจกว่าเมืองไหนๆในโลก ไม่ใช่ระดับท่านชีคทำไม่ได้แน่นอนค่าาาา
