Honeymooning in Africa: Cape Town

Time for honeymoon, time for our trip of a lifetime! 

It didn’t take us  long to choose our destination, we love travelling, and we know that many destinations can be done in a very special and exclusive way. We wanted to do something different from the “usual” island retreat, we wanted to be somewhere not surrounded by other honeymooners, and we wanted to go somewhere we had never been before. Africa has always been a dream destination, somewhere far, exotic, different, so when my husband suggested a trip to South Africa we both thought it would fit our idea of Honeymoon.

หลังจากครองตัวอยู่บนคานมานานหลายทศวรรษ ในที่สุดก็มีอัศวิน (หน้ามืด) ขี่ม้าขาวหลวมตัวมาร้องเรียกอยู่หน้าประตูรั้วบ้าน อ้อยเข้าปากช้างแล้วมีรึจะพลาด ได้ทีรีบเก็บผ้าผ่อนแล้วกระโดดขึ้นหลังม้าตามรอยเจ้าหญิงดิสนีย์ไอด้อลของเราๆอย่างไม่มีรั้งรอ (บั้ยส์ค่ะความโสด!) จะว่าไปไม่เคยคิดฝันเลยจริงๆว่าเราจะมีวันนี้ วันที่จะได้ไปลองลิ้มชิมรสน้ำผึ้งพระจันทร์ที่ใครต่อใครต่างโปรยกันว่ามันช่างหวานนุ่มชุ่มลิ้นนัก…

ใช่ค่ะ เรากำลังแพลนทริปฮันนีมูนกันอยู่! โน่นก็อยากไป นี่ก็อยากไป โอ้ยยย แค่การเลือกจุดหมายนี่ก็ลำบากใจไม่ใช่น้อย ด้วยความที่เราทั้งคู่อยากทำอะไรที่พิเศษกว่าการไปรีสอร์ทหรูบนเกาะสวย หรือสถานที่โรแมนติกอื่นๆที่คู่ฮันนีมูนต่างพร้อมใจกันไป หวยจึงมาออกที่ประเทศ South Africa ดินแดนในฝันที่อยู่แสนไกล แตกต่าง และแปลกใหม่! คิดเอาไว้ว่าน่าจะเป็นอะไรที่ตื่นตาตื่นใจสำหรับเราทั้งคู่ และเราก็มั่นใจว่าเราเลือกไม่ผิดจริงๆค่ะ 

We left Italy on Qatar Airways Dreamliner Business Class, connecting in Doha and then bound for Cape Town, the first stop on our African trip. They surely knew how to make us feel pampered and well looked after, so we landed in Cape Town fresh and rested after the overnight flight, ready to pick up our car and explore this city.

ทริปฮันนีมูนของเราเริ่มขึ้นตั้งแต่วินาทีแรกที่ก้าวขึ้นเครื่องบินค่ะ เปลี่ยนชุดนอนแล้วเอนตัวเหยียดขานอนสบายยาวไปกับเครื่องบินรุ่น Dreamliner ชั้นบิซิเนสของสายการบิน Qatar Airways ที่มีเบาะนั่งกว้าง วางของได้เยอะ ผนวกกับอาหารและเครื่องดื่มที่คัดสรรมาอย่างดี และการบริการแบบไม่มีขาดตกบกพร่อง เราจึงไปถึงที่หมายเมือง Cape Town โดยไม่รู้สึกเหนื่อยเพลียแต่อย่างใด เป็นการเดินทางที่สบ๊ายสบายเหมือนลอยละล่องอยู่ในฝันสมกับชื่อ Dreamliner จริงๆ

We had booked a room at the exclusive Mannabay hotel, a super luxurious villa turned into a small boutique guesthouse, located in the Oranjezicht district which sits on the slopes of the Table Mountain. The decor was modern and quirky, our room was called Versailles and had a very funky theme. Each room is decorated in a different style, but the Versailles suite is the only one commanding a breathtaking view over the city and the Atlantic Ocean. If there is a way to fall in love at first sight, then I cannot imagine anything better than this.

ที่เคปทาวน์ เราได้จองห้องพักไว้ที่โรงแรมบูทีคสุดเอ็กซ์คลูซีฟ Mannabay hotel ในย่านบ้านมหาเศรษฐีน้องๆเบเวอรี่ฮิลส์ Oranjezicht ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ตรงเชิงเขา Table mountain ที่โรงแรมนี้แต่ละห้องจะมีคอนเซ็ปท์ไอเดียในการตกแต่งสวยเก๋ต่างกันไป ห้องที่เราพักมีชื่อว่า Versailles เป็นห้องสูทห้องเดียวที่มีระเบียงกว้าง สามารถเห็นวิวสวยของเมืองและมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติกสุดสายตา ยอมรับว่าตกหลุมรักเมืองนี้ทันทีที่ได้เห็นวิวจากระเบียงห้องนี่แหละค่ะ! ส่วนบรรยากาศภายในห้องนั้นนับว่าโดนใจเจ้าสาวป้ายแดงสุดๆ งานเฟอร์ฯทุกชิ้นเก๋ไก๋สไลเดอร์ จนเผลอจินตนาการไปว่านี่คงเป็นพระราชวังแวร์ซายในยุคมิลเลนเนียม ที่ปลื้มสุดคงจะเป็นห้องน้ำและห้องแต่งตัว ไหนจะ walk-in closet ไหนจะอ่างจากุซซี่ (นี่ไม่ได้ฝันไปใช่ม๊ายยย?!) ทางโรงแรมได้จัดเตรียมขนมหวานกับแชมเปญแช่เย็นไว้ต้อนรับคู่ฮันนีมูนอีกด้วยค่ะ งานนี้เลยประทับอกประทับใจกันไปตามระเบียบ 

What makes Cape Town so unique and beautiful is how this city fits in the natural scenery. The town center is squeezed between the Bay and the Table Mountain, and if you drive around just a few minutes there are many different neighborhoods all different in character and style: a short hop from the business district and you could be surfing in Camps Bay, or wine tasting in Constantia, Cape Town’s own wine neighborhood.

In the main part of town, The V&A Waterfront is a shopping and entertainment complex which is the meeting point for many in the city. Unlike other boring shopping malls, its collection of shops, cafes and restaurants is spread out in the harbour area so it is a pleasure to stroll around.

สิ่งที่ทำให้เมืองเคปทาวน์ถูกกล่าวขวัญถึงเป็นอย่างมากคือทัศนียภาพที่งดงามไม่ซ้ำใคร เพราะเป็นเมืองที่มีตำแหน่งที่ตั้งพิเศษกว่าเมืองใหญ่เมืองอื่น ถูกโอบล้อมขนาบไปด้วยทั้งภูเขาและทะเล ทำให้ได้อยู่ใกล้ชิดกับธรรมชาติมากๆ การเดินทางไปไหนมาไหนในเมืองก็สะดวกง่ายดาย จากศูนย์กลางย่านธุรกิจ ใช้เวลาเพียงไม่นาน คุณสามารถไปโผล่อยู่บนกระดานโต้คลื่นที่อ่าว Camps Bay หรือไปนั่งจิบไวน์รสเลิศอยู่กลางไร่องุ่นในย่าน Constantia แหล่งผลิตไวน์ชั้นดีของเมือง

เราพักเหนื่อยกันเล็กน้อยก็ได้เวลาออกสำรวจเมือง บ่ายวันนั้นเราไปเดินเล่นกันที่ V&A Waterfront แหล่งช้อปปิ้ง ร้านอาหาร และศูนย์รวมความบันเทิงยอดนิยมของชาวเมือง โลเกชั่นสวย วิวดี ด้วยตั้งอยู่ที่ริมอ่าวพร้อมวิวภูเขาลูกใหญ่ ความเก๋ไก๋ของที่นี่อยู่ที่ร้านรวงจะกระจายกันอยู่รอบๆบริเวณท่าเรือ แค่แวะมาเดินเล่นชมวิวก็เพลินอย่าบอกใคร 

Our first evening there was also my husband’s birthday, so he decided to drive south of the Table Mountain to dine at The Greenhouse at The Cellars-Hohenort, in the Constantia district. This area is very peaceful and still hosts many colonial buildings, we drove only thirty minutes but it felt like visiting a different country altogether. The restaurant itself was great, we had an amazing meal prepared with care and we enjoyed a top service from the staff. 

I must admit I had some worries visiting Africa, I was not sure what to expect. By the end of my first day I was in love with the place, I could not have imagined such a well kept, upmarket and stunning destination.

และค่ำคืนนั้นเองเป็นอีกหนึ่งคืนสุดพิเศษ เพราะตรงกับวันเกิดของคุณสามีพอดีเป๊ะ! แน่นอนค่ะนางจองร้านอาหารบรรยากาศดีเอาไว้ (เรื่องกินขอให้บอก) ร้าน Greenhouse ตั้งอยู่ในโรงแรมหรูสไตล์โคโลเนียล The Cellars-Hohenort ในย่านไร่องุ่น Constantia ที่แสนสงบเงียบสงัดในยามราตรี ระหว่างขับไปถนนมืดและเงียบมากจริงๆค่ะ นานๆถึงจะมีรถวิ่งสวนมาซักคัน แต่พอเข้าไปในบริเวณโรงแรมเท่านั้น บรรยากาศกลับพลิกจากหน้ามือเป็นหลังมือ มีรถจอดอยู่เต็มลานจอด ไฟสว่างไสว ดูอบอุ่นคึกคักขึ้นมาซะอย่างนั้น คืนนั้นเราประทับใจทั้งรสชาติอาหารและเซอร์วิสของทางร้าน เชฟได้เลือกใช้วัตถุดิบและตกแต่งหน้าตาของอาหารให้เข้ากับบรรยากาศของฤดูใบไม้ร่วง ณ ขณะนั้น (ช่วงต้นเดือนพฤษภาคม) อาหารทุกจานจึงออกมาเป็นโทนสีอบอุ่น ดูมีกิมมิกดีค่ะ

วันแรกที่เมืองเคปทาวน์ผ่านไปด้วยดี เมืองสวย สะอาด น่าอยู่ เต็มไปด้วยร้านอาหารและอาคารบ้านเรือนหน้าตาทันสมัย เหนือกว่าที่คาดหมายเอาไว้มากเลยค่ะ! 

The must-do activity in Cape Town is to take the cable car to the Table Mountain, the landmark of the city. This mountain is only 1,000 metre high, but the fact that it is flat on top, makes it a great place to enjoy a 360 degrees view of the area. It is also very much in the city center, so whenever the weather is good just head there and enjoy the scenery; it can easily get windy or cloudy in this area, and the mountain top can become covered by a layer of cloud, ironically named tablecloth by the locals.

It is popular with tourists but it did not feel crowded when we visited, and it was pleasant to share the natural scenery with a few little cute animals called Dassie, they seemed to enjoy the views as much as I did. They live in this area and apparently are the closest related animals to elephants, at least from a genetic point, because their appearance is certainly not!

วันถัดมา เราควบรถขึ้นเขาแต่เช้าเพื่อที่จะไปขึ้นเคเบิ้ลคาร์ต่อไปยังจุดชมวิวบนยอดเขา Table Mountain ซึ่งเป็นจุดแลนด์มาร์คของเมือง การันตีความพิเศษด้วยตำแหน่ง New 7 Wonders of Nature หรือ หนึ่งในเจ็ดสิ่งมหัศจรรย์ทางธรรมชาติแห่งใหม่ของโลก ตัวภูเขาเองนั้นไม่ได้สูงนัก (จุดสูงสุดอยู่ที่ 1,086 เมตร) แต่ความน่าสนใจของภูเขาแห่งนี้อยู่ที่ยอดเขาที่มีลักษณะเป็นพื้นโล่งแบนราบเหมือนกับโต๊ะ วันดีคืนดีมีเมฆหนามาปกคลุมบนยอดเขา ชาวเมืองผู้มีวิสัยทัศน์กว้างไกลก็ตั้งชื่อให้ว่า “ผ้าปูโต๊ะ” (เห็นภาพตามไหมคะ?) ขอน้อมรับว่าเป็นยอดเขาที่มีบริเวณกว้างขวางมากกกกกจริงๆค่ะ เดินจนเหนื่อยก็ยังไม่ทั่วเลย นอกจากวิวสวยหยุดลมหายใจทุกมุมมองแล้ว เจ้า Dassie สัตว์พื้นเมืองขนปุกปุยหน้าตาคล้ายหนูที่อาศัยอยู่บนนั้น ก็เป็นจุดสนใจของนักท่องเที่ยวไม่ยิ่งหย่อนไปกว่ากัน มันชอบออกมายืนอาบแดดชมวิวบนยอดผา บ้างก็ออกมาวิ่งเล่นทักทายแขกผู้มาเยือน ถึงขนาดจะต่างกันลิบลับ ว่ากันว่ามันคือสัตว์ที่มีสายพันธุ์ใกล้เคียงกับ “ช้าง” ที่สุดค่ะ (ขยี้ตารัวๆ) 

After visiting the mountain, we stopped for lunch at The Test Kitchen. This restaurant has recently gained worldwide attention and won several awards for its innovative food, so we could not give it a miss. We actually wanted to visit for dinner, but despite we booked five months in advance we only managed a spot at lunchtime. The place is easygoing with industrial-style decor and the food delicious, but best part possibly is the price you pay. The value for money is amazing, and it is one of the reasons why it gets fully booked so quickly.

มื้อกลางวันของวันนี้คือมื้อที่เราสองคนชอบมากที่สุด The Test Kitchen เป็นร้านอาหารที่มีรางวัลการันตีมากมายจากทั่วโลก แต่กระนั้นสนนราคาในเมนูกลับไม่สาหัสเหมือนร้านชื่อดังร้านอื่นๆ (ถูกและดีมีที่นี่ค่า!) ภายในร้านทำเป็นครัวขนาดกว้างแบบเปิดโล่งและไม่มีกระจกกั้น เราจึงเห็นเชฟทุกคนขมักเขม้นปรุงอาหารให้เราแบบใกล้ชิดติดขอบ การตกแต่งร้านก็เป็นไปแบบเรียบๆง่ายๆ แถมที่ตั้งยังอยู่ใน community mall เล็กๆใกล้กับโกดังโรงงาน บรรยากาศโดยรวมจึงดูอาร์ตๆดิบๆ ไม่พิถีพิถันปรุงแต่ง แต่เรื่องรสชาติอาหารและความคิดสร้างสรรค์ในการปรุงแต่ละจานนั้น ขอบอกว่าไม่ธรรมดา ร้านนี้ฮิตติดลมขนาดที่เราจองดินเนอร์มื้อเย็นเป็นเวลา 5 เดือนล่วงหน้าก็ยังไม่ได้โต๊ะ เลยต้องเปลี่ยนแผนเป็นจองมื้อกลางวันแทน คิดดูเอาเองละกันค่ะว่าร้านเขาเด็ดดวงขนาดไหน!

Another day we decided to drive out of town to explore the Cape Peninsula, heading towards the Cape of Good Hope. We took an amazing coastal road called Chapmans Peak Drive, bordering the Ocean on our way south. We then stopped  at Boulders beach, where a small colony of African Penguins live. It was the first time I could see them in their natural environment, without the risk of freezing to death. 

วันที่สามเราขับรถลงทางใต้ Cape Peninsula วิ่งเลียบชายทะเลมุ่งไปทางแหลมกู๊ดโฮป ถนนเส้นสวยสายนี้มีชื่อว่า Chapmans Peak Drive ซึ่งได้ถูกปิดปรับปรุงอยู่หลายปี ก่อนจะเปิดให้รถได้สัญจรตามปกติไม่นานก่อนเราไป จุดหมายของเราอยู่ที่ Boulders beach ชายหาดที่เต็มไปด้วยนกเพนกวิ้นตัวจ้อยสายพันธุ์แอฟริกา เขาทำเป็นเขตอนุรักษ์ไว้ให้นกเพนกวินได้อยู่กันตามธรรมชาติ ไม่ใช่สวนสัตว์แต่อย่างใด ถือเป็นฉากที่ประทับใจและตื่นตาที่สุดของทริปนี้สำหรับเรามนุษย์ผู้คลั่งไคล้ในสัตว์โลกน่ารักทั้งปวง นกเพนกวิ้นตัวมันเล็กๆ เดินต้วมเตี้ยมๆ แล้วอยู่รวมกันเป็นร้อยตัว โอ้ย มันช่างน่าร๊ากกกเกินจะสรรหาคำมาบรรยาย 

My husband being very keen on good food all the time, booked lunch at a local private home not far away. The place was called The Flagship, and the concept was to replicate a family lunch with friends. It is not open to anybody, but the place had to be booked and paid in advance. A great chef called Duncan was playing the host, looking after a couple of dozen guests for this unique lunch experience. The food was seafood based, given the location overlooking the False bay, and he always suggested some great wines to pair with each dish. We made friends with a couple of other travelers from USA, shared stories and enjoyed a good lunch among friends. Sometimes I am skeptical about those concept venues, but this place really hit the mark. I understand that now The Flagship is not operating anymore, but I bet Duncan has some other projects in mind, hopefully in time for our next trip to South Africa.

ฟินกับการเยือนอาณาจักรของเพนกวิ้นน้อยเสร็จแล้ว ก็ได้เวลาตะลุยกินต่อ (ฮ่าๆ) งานนี้คุณสามีจองร้านอาหารในเมืองใกล้กับหาดเอาไว้ ร้านนี้มีชื่อเก๋ว่า The Flagship อันที่จริงเรียกว่าร้านอาหารก็คงจะไม่ถูกนัก เพราะเขาไม่ได้เปิดให้คนทั่วไปเข้าได้ แขกที่มาได้คือต้องจองวันและจ่ายเงินเต็มจำนวนล่วงหน้าเท่านั้น คล้ายๆกับการจัด Private party ที่บ้านเพื่อนแบบ Invitation only! (ซอรี่น้า เฉพาะผู้ที่ได้รับเชิญเท่านั้นจ้าาา)

มาถึงเป็นบ้านกว้างขนาดสองชั้นสีครีมที่หันหน้าไปทางอ่าว False bay ตอนเราเข้าไปมีแขกกรุ๊ปนึงนั่งอยู่ที่โซฟาอยู่ก่อนแล้ว มีพนักงานคอยรินแชมเปญเสิร์ฟระหว่างนั่งรอให้ทุกคนมาครบ วันนั้นมีแขกประมาณ 20 คน เชฟบอกว่าเป็นกรุ๊ปใหญ่สุดที่เคยจัดเลย เราถูกจัดให้นั่งโต๊ะร่วมกับคู่สามีภรรยาชาวอเมริกัน 6 คน ความมีอัธยาศัยดีของทุกคนทำให้มื้อนี้เป็นมื้อที่เต็มไปด้วยรอยยิ้มและเสียงหัวเราะ อาหารได้ถูกทะยอยนำมาเสิร์ฟขึ้นโต๊ะทีละจานพร้อมกับ wine pairing เป็นเมนูซีฟู๊ดที่เชฟและผู้ช่วยทำกันสดๆที่ครัวในบ้านนั้นเลย ช่วงพักเบรคก่อนทานของหวาน แขกทุกคนต่างลงไปชั้นล่างที่เป็นที่โล่งและมีสระว่ายน้ำ เพื่อนั่งเล่นสูดอากาศสดชื่นที่มาพร้อมกับกลิ่นทะเลและคลอรีนอ่อนๆ 

ข่าวแว่วมาว่าปัจจุบันร้านได้ปิดตัวลงแล้ว เพราะบ้านหลังนั้นได้ถูกเปลี่ยนมือ อย่างไรก็ดีเราเชื่อว่าเชฟ Duncan คนเก่ง น่าจะมีโปรเจคใหม่ที่รอจะเปิดเผยสู่สาธารณะในเร็ววันนี้ หวังว่าจะทันพอดีกับทริปครั้งต่อไปของเรานะคะเชฟ! 

I had a great few days in Cape Town, I enjoyed the food and the wine, I felt amazed at the stunning scenery, easily forgot I was in Africa, and then remembered again whenever the electricity would stop working (which apparently is common there). It is a city I will visit again, I am sure about it; but now it is time to drive an hour east to the Cape Winelands, our second part of this South African adventure.
