Exploring Lisbon on the Tram 28

Last summer we flew to Portugal to attend a wedding in the south coast, so it was the perfect chance to spend a few days in Lisbon and discover this capital city.

We found a nice apartment on AirBnB right in the location we wanted, in the Chiado area, a traditional neighborhood full of shops and cafes. It sits right in-between the historical center of Baixa (low neighborhood) and the hipster nightlife spot of Bairro Alto (high neighborhood).

คราวนี้เราจองห้องพักผ่านทาง AirBnB ได้ห้องอพาร์ทเมนต์ลุคโมเดิร์นแต่งพร็อพแน่นทุกกระเบียด โลเกชั่นถูกใจในราคาน่ารัก อพาร์ทเมนต์หลังนี้ตั้งอยู่ในมุมสงบของย่าน Chiado ที่เต็มไปด้วยบาร์และคาเฟ่สุดฮิปอินเทรนด์ อยู่กึ่งกลางระหว่าง Baixa ย่านเมืองเก่าที่มีตึกอาคาร low rise แบบยุคก่อน กับ Bairro Alto ย่านแห่งความศิวิไลซ์ ที่เป็นแหล่ง hang out ยามค่ำคืนของชาวเมือง

As you might have guessed, Lisbon is also known as “The City of seven hills”, being quite hilly, and despite the distances are quite small it does take some energy to walk around this fascinating city, so having the perfect location is the best starting point. The Elevador de Santa Justa is a cast-iron elevator built in 1902 to connect the lower and upper part of the neighborhood, so clearly I am not the first one to complain about the climbs.

Lisbon มีภูมิประเทศส่วนใหญ่เป็นเนินเขา จนได้รับขนานนามว่า “The City of seven hills” หรือ เมืองแห่งเจ็ดเนินเขา (เหมือนกับฉายาของเมืองโรมยังไงยังงั้น) การเดินลัดเลาะเที่ยวในเมืองจึงเป็นอะไรที่เหนื่อยหน่อย เพราะหันไปทางไหนก็มีแต่เนินเขา ปี 1902 ทางเมืองจึงได้สร้าง Elevador de Santa Justa ลิฟท์ที่ทำจากเหล็กกล้าเพื่อเชื่อมระหว่างบริเวณที่ราบต่ำกับบนเนินเขาเข้าด้วยกัน เราไม่ใช่คนแรกที่บ่นเรื่องเนินสินะ..

Another way to explore Lisbon is the Tram 28, an institution and possibly my favorite attraction of the city, the airy feeling while riding on it was so refreshing after a long day out.

อีกทางเลือกหนึ่งที่ชาวเมืองและนักท่องเที่ยวนิยมกันมากคือ การขึ้นรถแทรมสาย 28 ที่เป็นเสมือนจุดขายของเมือง Lisbon ก็ว่าได้ รถแทรมสายนี้จะพาเราวิ่งผ่านจุดท่องเที่ยวหลักๆใจกลางเมือง มีลมโชยเย็นๆจากหน้าต่างระหว่างนั่งชมวิวข้างทางเพลินๆ สนุกกว่าเดินกลางแดดเป็นไหนๆค่ะ

After breakfast at the famous café A Brasileira, probably the most traditional bar of Lisbon, a walk that I would recommend to everyone is Alfama, a small area full of charm and narrow cobbled streets, the landmark Cathedral Sé de Lisboa is there, and the whole area is dominated by the Castle of Saint George, climb there to enjoy the best views of the city.

เช้าแรกเราไม่ลังเลที่จะลองทานอาหารเช้าสไตล์ดั้งเดิม ที่คาเฟ่เก่าแก่และมีชื่อที่สุดของเมืองลิสบอน A Brasileira ที่นั่นคุณสาใช้เวลาช่วงเช้าอย่างคุ้มค่า จิบกาแฟ กินขนมทาร์ตไข่ นั่งจดๆจ้องๆมองแผนที่พลางแพลนโปรแกรมสำหรับทริปนี้ อันดับแรกเราเลือกไปเดินชม Alfama ย่านขนาดเล็กที่มีเสน่ห์และถูกพูดถึงมากที่สุดในหมู่นักท่องเที่ยว เราเดินลัดเลาะไปตามถนนหินสายเล็กๆ เพื่อชมบ้านเรือนและความเป็นอยู่ของคนในชุมชน โบสถ์ Cathedral Sé de Lisboa ที่เป็นแลนด์มาร์คของเมืองก็อยู่ในบริเวณนี้ เสร็จจากการเดินชมภาคพื้นดินแล้ว เราก็เขยิบสูงขึ้นไปยังปราสาท Castle of Saint George เพื่อชมวิวจากทางอากาศบ้าง จากตำแหน่งที่ตั้งของปราสาทเราสามารถเห็นวิวเมืองได้ทั่วแบบ 360 องศาเลยค่ะ มิเสียแรงที่ผนึกลมปราณไต่ขึ้นมา

In the evening, a great spot to have a drink while still enjoying great views is the rooftop bar at Hotel do Chiado, it dominates the Baixa area thanks to its privileged location and it does not seems to be too busy with tourists, yet.

ตกเย็นอากาศชิลล์ๆกำลังดี ก่อนดินเนอร์เราเลยแวะไปดื่มที่บาร์บนดาดฟ้าของโรงแรม Hotel do Chiado ซึ่งอยู่ในย่านเดียวกันกับที่พักแต่จะอยู่ใกล้ถนนสายช้อปปิ้งมากกว่า บนนั้นเขาทำเป็นสวน ปูพื้นด้วยหญ้าเขียวของจริง ให้คำจำกัดความของ rooftop garden ได้ดีไม่มีผิดเพี้ยน จากฝั่งนี้เราจะเห็นวิวของย่าน Baixa ปราสาท Castle of Saint George และลิฟท์ Elevador de Santa Justa ชัดเจน วิวสวยขนาดนี้แถมลูกค้ายังไม่เยอะ ถือเป็น hidden spot ที่ควรค่าแก่การมาเยือนอย่างยิ่งค่ะ

Just by chance, the second evening I was there it was “Vogue Fashion Night out”; a fun event where shops are open till late, promoting new clothes and accessories, bars are full of people giving the city an amazing party vibe. Other than looking at the usual brands, I loved to walk into small handicraft shops where local artists would display their latest creation, either about fashion, art, or food.

นับว่ามาได้ถูกที่ถูกเวลา คืนถัดมาเมืองทั้งเมืองกลับคึกคักขึ้นมาด้วยงานอีเว้นท์ใหญ่ของนิตยสารแฟชั่นชั้นนำของโลก “Vogue Fashion Night out” กรี๊ดสิคะรออะไร สาวกแฟชั่นอย่างเรามีหรือจะพลาดงานใหญ่ระดับนี้ อีเว้นท์นี้สร้างสีสันให้ถนนสายช้อปปิ้งอย่างมหาศาล ร้านรวงตกแต่งประดับประดาเต็มที่ ไหนจะการแสดงแสงสีเสียง คนออกมาเดินกันแน่นไปทั้งถนน ผิดกับบรรยากาศเมื่อคืนก่อนเลยค่ะ แถมแต่ละร้านต่างก็มีลูกล่อลูกชนไว้เรียกลูกค้า บ้างก็มีเครื่องดื่มและอาหารไว้บริการ บ้างก็มีเกมส์และการแสดงโชว์ บ้างก็มีนายแบบหนุ่มหล่อมายืนเป็นนายกวักอยู่หน้าร้าน ไม่ต้องสงสัยค่ะว่าร้านไหนคนแน่นสุด ฮ่าๆๆ แต่จะว่าไปเราชอบพวกร้านเล็กๆของศิลปินและดีไซน์เนอร์ท้องถิ่นกันมากกว่า ดูมีเอกลักษณ์น่าสนใจดี (อันนี้พูดจริงจริ๊ง)

And talking about artists, I could not resist trying the culinary creation of local “Chef Jose Avillez”, since a couple of his restaurants were literally around the corner from our apartment. Cantinho do Avillez is a laid-back restaurant, the feeling is almost bistro style, yet a great place to enjoy some authentic Portuguese with a modern twist. The two Michelin star Belcanto, however, is pure fine dining and by many considered the best restaurant in Lisbon, if not the all country. The environment is formal but since it is a very small venue it keeps a familiar and intimate feel.

พูดถึงศิลปินก็พลอยนึกไปถึงศิลปินแห่งวงการอาหาร (หรือ “เชฟ” นั่นเอง) งานนี้เราสองคนก็ไม่พลาดที่จะลิ้มลองฝีมือของเชฟดังเจ้าถิ่น “Jose Avillez” ที่เข็นร้านอาหารภายใต้การดูแลของเขาออกมาหลายรูปแบบ ร้านแรกที่เราลองคือ Cantinho do Avillez เป็นร้านสไตล์ bistro ที่นำเสนออาหารฟิวชั่นในบรรยากาศสบายๆ ส่วนอีกร้านเป็นร้าน fine dining พะยี่ห้อมิชิลินสองดาว ที่หลายคนยกให้เป็นร้านอาหารที่ดีที่สุดของลิสบอน นามว่า  Belcanto ถึงแม้บรรยากาศร้านออกจะดูเป็นทางการ แต่ด้วยขนาดที่เล็ก และบริการที่เป็นกันเอง เราจึงทานอาหารอร่อยกันแบบไม่อึดอัด

The food is fantastic, the tasting menus are inspired by the historical journey of this former colonial country, so the influence is not only local. The standout dish for me was the “Oxtail with foie gras”, I can still dream about it whenever I read oxtail on any menu. “The garden of the gooses that laid the golden eggs” was another signature dish that looked fascinating with the eatable gold wrap.

เมนูที่เราชอบเป็นพิเศษชื่อ “สวนที่แม่ห่านออกไข่เป็นสีทอง” จานนี้สีทองอร่ามตามชื่อค่ะ เป็นเมนูไข่ที่ถูกปรุงให้ไข่ขาวสุกพอเป็นรูปร่างแต่ไข่แดงด้านในยังเป็นน้ำเยิ้มๆเข้มข้นหวานมันส์ แล้วห่อไข่ทั้งใบอีกทีด้วยทองคำเปลวชนิดทานได้ ไข่ห่านสีทองลูกใหญ่หน้าตาดูเลอค่าราวกับอาหารสำรับขึ้นโต๊ะของคิงหลุยส์กะต๊อดแห่งราชวังแวร์ซายก็ไม่ปาน อีกจานคือ “หางวัวและตับห่าน” ที่เคี่ยวเนื้อจนนุ่มราดด้วยซอสรสกลมกล่อมเข้ากัน อร่อยติดใจชนิดที่ว่าเห็นเมนูหางวัวที่ไหน เป็นได้หวนนึกถึงรสชาติของจานเด็ดจานนี้ทุกครั้งไป

A great day trip can be done by jumping on the local train and heading to Cascais. This town lies at the outskirt of Lisbon, and it is a favorite among the locals who want to enjoy the beach. Cascais has got its own identity and character, but what I enjoyed the most was the walking path along the Ocean, where I could look out at the sea and admire the waves crashing on the cliffs, there is something very relaxing in watching the power of nature. The Boca do Inferno, or “mouth of Hell”, is the best spot to witness the force of the Ocean against the land.

ใกล้ๆลิสบอนก็มีเมืองชายทะเลที่น่าสนใจ ที่เราสามารถจับรถไฟไปเช้าเย็นกลับได้แบบไม่เหนื่อย เมืองพักผ่อนยอดนิยมของชาวลิสบอน Cascais (แคสไค้ส์) ตั้งอยู่ริมชายฝั่งมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก มีทางเดินเลียบหาดยาว เป็นอีกเส้นทางที่เหมาะสำหรับวิ่งและปั่นจักรยานเล่น ตลอดทางเดินเรามองดูคลื่นซัดโขดหินริมหาดเป็นระลอก ดูสงบและผ่อนคลายอย่างบอกไม่ถูก เราเดินไกลไปจนถึงจุดท่องเที่ยวขึ้นชื่อของเมือง Boca do Inferno (หรือ “ปากเหวนรก”) หาดบริเวณนี้เป็นกลุ่มหินผาก้อนใหญ่ที่ถูกคลื่นโถมซัดกัดกร่อนจนเป็นรูโหว่เหมือนปากทางเข้าถ้ำ คลื่นตรงนี้แรงจริงๆค่ะ ขนาดเราอยู่ตรงจุดชมวิวที่ทำห่างออกมาพอควร ยังแอบสะพรึงกับความดุดันของเกลียวคลื่นที่โถมซัดเข้าฝั่งดังโครมๆ

Even better is booking a table at the Design Hotel Farol, the restaurant will guarantee a great view out towards the Ocean while the local staff will serve you chilled Vino Verde (green wine, a local variety of white wine) and good seafood to please your mouth as much as your eyes. Bliss!

เดินย้อนกลับไปตรงหัวหาด ตรงนั้นเป็นที่ตั้งของ Design Hotel Farol โรงแรมบูทีคดีไซน์สวย ที่มีประภาคารตั้งเด่นอยู่ริมทะเล (มาทราบทีหลังว่า Farol หมายถึงประภาคารค่ะ) ห้องอาหารของโรงแรมได้มุมเหมาะ หันหน้าเข้าหาทะเลและเห็นวิวสระว่ายน้ำ เราจึงเลือกนั่งโต๊ะด้านนอก แล้วสั่งอาหารทะเลเบาๆมาทานแกล้มกับ “ไวน์เขียว” หรือ Vino Verde (ซึ่งก็คือไวน์ขาวชนิดหนึ่งค่ะ) ลองสังเกตุดู สีของไวน์ออกอมเหลืองๆเขียวๆจริงด้วยค่ะ

งานเลี้ยงย่อมมีวันเลิกรา จึงขอสั่งลาทริปประทับใจนี้แบบมีกิมมิกเบาๆ ด้วยไวน์เขียวแช่เย็นเฉียบกับฉากประภาคารสวยๆ ณ ริมมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก Cheers ค่ะพี่น้องผองเพื่อน! xoxo
