Arabian Journey: Abu Dhabi

It had for long been a dream of mine to ride a camel in the desert, so when I had the chance to visit the Persian Gulf, it was very exciting to finally tick this item off my bucket list.

The destination was the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, and while the final stop was going to be the desert of Rub al-Khali about two hours south,  we had the pleasure to spend a couple of days in the capital city of Abu Dhabi.

ไปทะเล(ทราย)กันดีกว่า!! ใฝ่ฝันมานมนานว่าจะต้องไปขี่อูฐกลางทะเลทรายให้ได้สักครั้ง จุดหมายหลักของเราจึงอยู่ที่รีสอร์ทหรูกลางทะเลทรายอันไกลโพ้นนน แต่ก่อนจะไปที่รีสอร์ทที่ว่าเรามีเวลา 3 วันสำหรับเที่ยวเล่นในเมืองอาบูดาบี เมืองหลวงแห่งสาธารณรัฐอาหรับเอมิเรตส์ ประเทศมหาเศรษฐีบ่อน้ำมัน ขอดูให้เห็นเป็นบุญตาหน่อยซิที่ว่ารวยนักรวยหนามันจะขนาดไหนกันเชี้ยววว

Arriving with the plane, it is amazing to see the contrast of the barren land, the sea and the modern building of this city. It certainly took a lot of vision and plenty of money to build something like this in the desert. Just before landing we flew over the Ferrari World, an adult orientated theme park in the Yas Island, part of the city entirely dedicated to having fun, with a huge water park, a Formula 1 circuit, the marina and the Ferrari World.

ก่อนเครื่องบินลงจอด วิวที่เห็นจากหน้าต่างคือบ้านเรือนและกลุ่มก้อนของตึกสูงระฟ้าบนผืนทะเลทรายและชายฝั่งทอดยาวของอ่าวเปอร์เซีย กัปตันพาบินอ้อมผ่าน Yas Island  เกาะที่มีสนามแข่งรถฟอร์มูล่าวัน มารีน่า และ Ferrari World  สวนสนุกที่สร้างขึ้นเพื่อความบันเทิงสำหรับผู้ใหญ่ เขาลงทุนกันหนักทีเดียวเพื่อจะเนรมิตสร้างทุกอย่างขึ้นมาท่ามกลางผืนทะเลทรายแห่งนี้

My destination was, however, the Corniche: the very long seaside road considered the main street of Abu Dhabi. My hotel the Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, a modern and comfortable hotel with all you can ask for, including the outdoor pool (unmissable during the hot summer days) and an award-winning Thai restaurant Silk & Spice, which I chose to visit in my first night, just in case my next desert trip would have me craving for home food.

เราพักที่โรงแรม Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche ใจกลางย่านหรู Corniche (คอนิช) ใกล้กับชายทะเล และเป็นที่ตั้งของโรงแรมห้าดาวหลายแห่ง จากห้องสามารถมองเห็นวิวทะเลและท่าเรือที่อยู่ไม่ไกล ห้องพักตกแต่งสไตล์โมเดิร์น อุปกรณ์ครบครันทันสมัย มีสระว่ายน้ำแบบกลางแจ้งขนาดใหญ่ เราไปถึงช่วงบ่ายๆ เช็คอินเสร็จแล้วก็ไม่รีรอที่จะขึ้นไปนั่งชิลล์เอาท์ กินลมชมวิว อาบแดดเบาๆ (ที่ 39 องศาเนี่ยนะ?!) ตกเย็นก็ทานข้าวกันในโรงแรมที่ร้านอาหารไทย Silk & Spice ซึ่งแอบมีรางวัลการันตีด้วยนะ ดูท่าคนที่นี่เขาชอบทานอาหารไทยมากค่ะ ถือเป็นอาหารเกรดดีดูไฮโซหน่อยๆ (อย่างนี้ก็ปลื้มสิคะ) สำหรับคนไทยอย่างเรารสชาติไม่ถึงกับเลิศเลอ แต่ก็ไม่น่าเกลียดอะไร นาทีนี้ขอกินตุนไว้ก่อนเผื่อหากินไม่ได้ตอนไปอยู่ทะเลทราย

Abu Dhabi is still a city in the making, and while it could somehow lack atmosphere there are a few very interesting sights to explore.

The main one is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the biggest of its kind, it can host over 40,000 people, it is made of 82 domes and roughly a thousand columns, all surrounded by gardens and ponds. They certainly did not mind spending big money here, indoor it houses the biggest hand-made carpet in the world and seven huge gold-plated chandeliers each containing several kilos of gold and thousands of Swarovski crystals.

เช้าถัดมาจะมัวช้าอยู่ใย ได้เวลาไปเยี่ยมชมมัสยิดสุดอลังการงานสร้างของท่านชีคแห่งอาบูดาบีนคร  Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque เป็นมัสยิดหลักของเมืองที่ใหญ่โตโอ่อ่าสมราคาเมืองมหาเศรษฐีพ่อบุญทุ่ม มัสยิดแห่งนี้จุผู้คนได้มากกว่า 40,000 คน ประกอบไปด้วยโดม 82 โดม เสากว่าพันต้น พรมทอมือเปอร์เซียผืนใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก โคมไฟระย้า chandelier ที่ทุกชิ้นทำจากทอง 24K และคริสตัลสวารอฟสกี้ และชิ้นที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก (สูง 15 เมตร เส้นผ่านศูนย์กลาง 10 เมตร น้ำหนัก 12 ตัน) ห้อยประดับอยู่ที่ห้องโถงกลาง หรือ main hall แถมรอบๆมัสยิดทำเป็นสวนหย่อมและบ่อน้ำ ผิวน้ำเวลาสะท้อนแดดเล่นประกายวิบวับกับตัวมัสยิดสีขาวคาดทอง เพิ่มเลเวลความหะรูหะราถึงขั้นสุด

Before entering, however, all women should wear the jihab, to respect the religious customs of Islam, but those are kindly provided free of charge by the staff. Men as well are requested to dress properly as they are visiting a religious site.

ที่นี่เปิดให้นักท่องเที่ยวเข้าชมได้ทุกวัน ยกเว้นวันศุกร์เช้าที่เปิดให้ผู้มาเข้าพิธีละหมาดเท่านั้น (เวลาเปิดปิดแต่ละวันไม่เหมือนกันค่ะ ยังไงควรเช็คให้ดีก่อนไป) ผู้หญิงทุกคนต้องใส่ชุดสีดำคลุมตั้งแต่หัวจรดเท้าตามแบบมุสลิม ซึ่งทางมัสยิดมีเตรียมไว้บริการไม่ต้องเสียค่าเช่าใดๆ ชุดคลุมสีดำเรียบๆ ดูสวยสง่า สุภาพ และให้เกียรติสถานที่มากๆ  ไอ่เรารึก็อดไม่ได้ที่จะชักภาพเก็บไว้เป็นที่ระลึกตามประสาคนไม่เคยใส่ เราไปก่อนที่แม่นาง Rihanna จะไปสร้างวีรกรรมจนถูกเชิญออก เลยไม่แน่ใจว่าตอนนี้เค้ามีการห้ามโพสถ่ายรูปหรือเปล่านะคะ ส่วนสามีใส่เสื้อเชิ้ตกับกางเกงขายาวดูเรียบร้อยดีแล้วจึงไม่ต้องเปลี่ยนอะไร เราไปถึงช่วงละหมาดพอดีค่ะ จึงต้องยืนรอข้างนอกจนกว่าจะเสร็จพิธีเขาจึงเปิดให้นักท่องเที่ยวเข้าเยี่ยมชมได้ ด้านนอกว่าสวยสุดๆแล้วด้านในยิ่งอลังกว่า ทุกอย่างดูใหญ่โตจนเหมือนเราเป็นแค่มดตัวเล็กๆเดินอยู่ในนั้น

In the evening we visited the self acclaimed ‘beyond 7 stars’ Emirates Palace, a luxurious  hotel on the Western end of the Corniche road. While often hotels are not regarded as tourist attraction themselves, this building is more like a royal palace and it is currently the second most expensive building ever built (after the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore). The gardens and the fountains around the Palace are majestic, and inside it is so huge I was afraid to get lost. With so many pieces of art on display it is easy to forget where you are and believe for a minute you are visiting a museum.

กลางคืนเรามีนัดกับ Emirates Palace โรงแรมหรูขนาดมหึมาที่ดูยังไงก็เหมือนจะเป็นปราสาทราชวังซะมากกว่า เขาว่าของเขาหรูเลิศกว่าโรงแรมระดับ 5 ดาวทั่วไป บวกลบคูณหารออกมาลงตัวที่ 7 ดาว (ขนาดนั้นเล้ย!) นอกจากภายในตัวอาคารที่แสนจะเว่อร์วัง ประดับประดาด้วยทอง ไข่มุก และคริสตัลจำนวนมากแล้ว บริเวณด้านนอกยังมีชายหาดส่วนตัว ลานน้ำพุ และสวนอันกว้างใหญ่  เดินไม่ดูตาม้าตาเรืออาจจะหลงทางได้ ไหนจะของแต่ละชิ้นที่ประโคมนำมาวางตกแต่งอีก เดินไปก็เผลอคิดว่านี่เรากำลังเดินอยู่ในพิพิธภัณฑ์ที่ไหนรึเปล่าหว่า ไม่แปลกใจเลยที่ค่าก่อสร้างโรงแรมนี้สูงปรี๊ดติดอันดับสองของสิ่งก่อสร้างที่แพงที่สุดในโลก!! (เป็นรองก็แค่ Marina Bay Sands ที่สิงคโปร์)

Inside the Palace, they installed the world first gold dispensing ATM machine, “Gold to Go”, where you can use your cash (100 euros minimum) to purchase gold bars or coins at the latest market price, which is updated every ten minutes.

ที่ล๊อบบี้โรงแรมมีตู้อัตโนมัติสำหรับซื้อทอง 24 กะรัต “Gold to Go” วางอยู่ วิธีซื้อคือใส่เงินสดในช่อง (ขั้นต่ำ 100 ยูโร) แล้วเลือกว่าจะเอาเป็นทองคำแท่งหรือเหรียญทองคำ เครื่องนี้ถูกสร้างขึ้นมาเพื่อสนับสนุนให้คนลงทุนกับทองคำกันได้ง่ายขึ้นเขาว่าอย่างงั้น ฉะนั้นทุกๆสิบนาทีจะมีการอัพเดทราคาทองคำในตลาดบนหน้าจอให้ลูกค้าตรวจเช็คได้ตลอด (เบิกเนตรมากอ่ะเรา)  ตู้นี้คือเครื่องแรกของโลกที่ผลิตออกมา ณ ปัจจุบันมีวางอยู่ 20 เครื่องในหลายๆประเทศทั่วโลกแล้วค่ะ

After wondering around the Palace, it was time to experience one of its many restaurants for dinner. Our choice went to Hakkasan, a branch of the famous Michelin-starred London eatery. The atmosphere entering the restaurant is immediately different, from the opulence of the Palace to the modern and slick design of this Cantonese restaurant. The clientele is definitely upmarket, but it was nice to see many locals enjoying Asian food in here. The menu is very nice, and we loved the Dim-sum and the Chilean sea-bass so much that we had to visit the original London restaurant at the next opportunity to order and try some more.

สามีจองร้านอาหารจีน Hakkasan สาขาของร้านมิชิลินหนึ่งดาวที่ลอนดอน บรรยากาศในร้านช่างต่างกันสุดขั้วกับตัวโรงแรม ยังกะเดินข้ามเวลาทะลุมิติมา 555 ร้านตกแต่งแบบ Contemporary Cantonese จัดเต็มแสงสี LED ทันสมัยได้โล่ห์ ที่มุมบาร์ดูคึกคักเป็นพิเศษ น่าจะเพราะเป็นคืนวันศุกร์ ส่วนอาหารก็แจ่มทุกจาน โดยเฉพาะติ่มซำ กับปลาหิมะราดซอส สองผัวเมียติดใจจนภายหลังต้องไปตามล่าหาชิมของออริจินัลที่สาขาลอนดอนต้นตำรับกันเลยทีเดียวจ้า เรื่องกินนี่ไม่เคยมียอมกัน โฮะๆ
